Gathered 'round the Thanksgiving table,
Are the folks who are dearest to me.
I know, as they talk to each other,
They aren't seeing the faces I see.

Grandpa and Grandma, and uncles and aunts
And a few even closer than those,
Are indelibly written on a memory page
In a book that I can't bear to close.

I lovingly gaze at these dear ones,
Toward faces that aren't really there.
With thanks to our generous Maker,
That another has filled up each chair.

I cover my sadness with gladness,
Amused at their jokes and their quips.
Trying not to let on that my thoughts are far gone,
To the pictures fond memory flips.

Just two years ago he was with us,
The one who is most on my mind.
I vainly search those at the table,
That missing, beloved face to find.

My daughters and precious grandchildren,
Bow their heads for my Thanksgiving prayer.
Praising the Lord for those present,
Remembering the ones who aren't here.

This day, too, will soon be a memory,
I shall add to my  burgeoning book,
And when this day is done and I am alone,
I'll turn each page for a comforting look,

Gone, but never forgotten.  A lovely tribute to the loved ones no longer with us as well as those now filling their chairs.  Thank you.

Joyce; This brought a tear to my eye for we always had Thanksgiving dinner with my parents and they have both gone to be with the Lord.  I can still hear my Father saying, "Let's gather together and thank the Lord for the blessings He has bestowed upon us."  I miss Mother's wonderful food and my Father's quiet ways.  I miss them sharing their love for the Lord with our family.  But, we will be gathered together again one day around the Lord's banquet table.  I look forward to that.  This was a beautiful poem  Joyce and I thank you for writing and sharing it.  Wanda

Joyce, this is beautiful. Thanksgiving will always hold those memories, and your loved ones will always be close to you. What a comforting poem, and once again, it is beautiful.

God bless America, my home sweet home.

Joyce,
It seems that your poetry always touches my heart. How much wisdom & insight are evidenced in them. WE have much to be thankful for presently, but let us not forget the multitude of former blessing which have graced our hearts and lives as well-which have actually served to help us become the people we have become. Like the wonderful Gospel song, "Precious Memories, how they linger!"

Thanks for the wonderful poem,

Happy Thanksgiving.  Your poem gives me much to think about.  I suppose that there is coming a feast that can't compare to that which we celebrate here on earth (The Marriage Supper) and a giving of thanks that will extend into the Eternities. Perhaps the table is already set and the Heavenly are just waiting for the last guests to arrive.  Perhaps it is us that are being anxiously awaited for to fill those empty seats......  We will hold on to that precious promise...  Yes, those precious photographs will hold  no more value when once again we'll meet our loved ones in the air.  Amen.  -Bob

Joyce:  A fine poem and I could almost picture your family around the table. We all miss those who are gone from us at these special days, more than ever.  The continuation of family traditions is a small way of remembering them.
