When Mountains Call (nature challenge) |

The mountains call to me at times And I must go where cold stone climbs Into the sky. From dizzy heights, I see a hundred lovely sights! Of rivers threading far below And lakes like jewels. Wildflowers grow In mountain meadows, carpet thick, Just waiting for someone to pick. And on the highest peaks, there gleams Last winter's snow, which feeds the streams That become rivers, as they wind And leave the high tors far behind. Up here, you look down at the clouds That hang in valleys, like gray shrouds. The eagle passes, eye to eye And screams defiance at the sky. The world is spread out at your feet. The thinning air is cold and sweet. In every dawn and sunset's flame, You hear God whispering your name. Very nice Trillium. I can see the mountains from my home but I can't climb them. We had a convention up on Mount Rainier a few years ago, and I simply couldn't breathe. LBut of course we weren't very high either. Joyce |

Wohooo! This was one splendid image you've penned out! Fantastic. I do have one question...what is this? "high tors" Can't say I've ever heard of that before. <*\\\>< |

WhtDove: Thanks for all your comments and approval of the poem; "High tors" are just high, rocky, mountain peaks. Sorry that I didn't add a note of explanation. Betty Lou Hebert |

Trillium, What a marvelous sensation you have reminded me of hiking above the clouds in los Padres National Forest and looking down on the Pacific Ocean just above Big Sur.... Gosh, God certainly has created many awe inspiring places for poetry.... I liked your phrase... "the eagle passes eye to eye and screams defiance at the sky...." this image is totally enthralling to me... really gives the feeling of reaching great heights. Again, when it comes to nature poem challenges, you seem to be a sure natural. Bob <>< |

Bob: Thank you so much for your nice comments. I'm glad the poem reminded you of hiking above Big Sur and a happy experience. When I wrote this I was thinking of Yosemite, another grand and awe inspiring reminder of His work. Betty Lou Hebert |
