Separated by a sea of time
Yet a heritage both yours and mine
Voices I have yet to hear
Faces I have never seen
Hailing from that Isle of Green
...Names from long ago.

What were your fondest hopes and dreams
What were your grandest plans and schemes
Were your thoughts and feelings
Much like mine
...So many years ago?

Your tragic sorrows, your joys sublime
All written on the scroll of time
Were your prayers and longings
Much like mine
...So many years ago?

Someday we'll meet on the other side
No longer parted by this tide
Your voices then I'll finally hear
Your faces I shall see at last
Faces from the distant past
...Names from long ago.

Separated by a sea of time
...Names from long ago.

This is wonderful, Denise - You've put into words the feeling I had as I wandered among the gravesites of my ancestors - who founded one of the first settlements in northern Maine.... Very nice work....

Beautiful, Denise. I imagine that if we were able to look back and talk to them, their dreams, hopes, aspirations and desires would be exactly like ours. Good thoughts.

I like this. It's funny how when you see a title a lot of times an image comes to mind of what the poem is going to be. This was not at all what I'd imagined, but I cretainly wasn't dissapointed

Thank you, Severn, Nan, Balladeer, Ruth, Elizabeth and Gunslinger. I'm glad you liked it! This was the second poem that I ever wrote. My sister was doing research on our family tree - everything came to a halt after we traced back our ancestors arrival on a ship from Ireland. Then we hit a brick wall for anything prior to that. (many orphans in the past and no further info. could be found.) I wrote this in response to that...we know the names but not much else. I'm glad you all liked it! Now on to Open # 5!

Denise, this poem of yours sounded like music
to me, and created such vivid pictures in my
mind! That's because, having studied my own
family's genealogy way back to the time of
Columbus, I came to the same conclusion that
you did: that we share many dreams, ideals,
hopes, but also sadness, misfortune and more
with our ancestors. We live between memories
of our past and dreams of our future, and
must learn to reconcile both in our hearts in order to be completely happy.
