Something in my last tale I felt
Was left undone, some fate undealt,
So here I present another tier
Entitled Death of a Musketeer.

((((For Denise, cause she asked))))

If you recall, when last we left them
Our tale of the Musketeers appeared done
There was one detail though, left undone
And that's the undoing of one.
The Musketeers rode back to Paris,
Their quarry in tow under Fleur d'Lis.
Half way back Dartegnan noticed
The looming fate of poor Aramis.
As you recall while dispatching the villian
Aramis was jumped by the villian's twin,
And while Athos moved to dispatch his prey
The villian's twin and Aramis frayed.
The villian died on Aramis' sword
But not before his own blade scored
And now poor Aramis was bleeding
From the ride a reprieve needing.
Upon reaching Paris and seeing the Queen
She embraced Aramis, bloody not clean
And she cried fallen tears as the bell tolled
The ten o'clock watch found Aramis cold.
And as Aramis' soul felt itself free
The Four Musketeers were now back to three.
Dartegnan, Porthos and Athos stood tall
As they moved Aramis down the hall
And the rest of the garrison heard the call
"All for one and one for all!"
They raised their swords in deft salute
The steel clanked out its ringing tribute.
Rain fell the next day, muddying the road
The coach travelled down, carrying its load.
The body of Aramis, coffined and cold.
Each eye did water, each woman cry
As Aramis parade of death did go by.
They took him to Versailles, on a green hill
And buried him there, lonely and still.
And the Three Musketeers were at his side
Not wanting to but saying goodbye.
The Priest spoke up quietly to say his piece
Over Aramis clothed in the Fleur d'Lis,
"So now you know, what becomes of us all
No matter how bold or brave or tall
We all face eternity based on what we did
Not for how we died, but for how we lived."
And the cry was heard, when the funeral done,
"One for all, and all for one!"

Thanks for the continuation. Since there are still three left alive, may I expect an acounting of their next travels? Please!
I enjoyed this very much.

Thanks OhMe...I fear the sequel is never as good as its predecessor...

The last time I was thinking
And tried with all my might
To say the words "Four Musketeers"
But it never sounded right
Thanks for finishing the tale
I'll surely sleep better tonight!

Excellent, Robert! Enthralling tale! I was carried along from the first word through to the last and was at the end before I knew it! I don't know about sequals not being as good as the predecessors...Sometimes they are just as good if not better. I know...you could take a cue from Marge and do a saga!!
I'm sure it would be very entertaining!

Dear RS. After reading these 2 excellent renditions, I would say that the last one was the smoothest. So that tells me the next sequel will be even better! How about it Rs? I know the finale is deep down in the heart of the poet! Let's have it, OK? Love You, RS, and all that you stand for. Love the way your comments reflect your depth & wisdom. Again, love you and your poetry & your versatility of subject.
