When it’s daytime in Alaska, Australia has its night Our Christmas is dark and cold; theirs is filled with hot sunlight We say they are “Down Under” as if buried deep underground I wonder if “Up Over” is where they think Alaska’s found The Arctic and the Outback offer adventure to most all Their rugged lands meet the horizon and mountains appear small Indigenous people subsist there, still tied to their homelands They hold tight to their unique cultures that most won’t understand Whether fishing for dugong or seeking whales in stormy seas Aborigines and Eskimo hunt foods their family’s need They work to preserve their cultures and keep the older ways Modern advances make traditions harder to keep safe. The North Pole and the South Pole are bookends of the earth Between them there are cities like Fairbanks and like Perth Australia and Alaska's lands are open, wild spaces Which is only one attribute that's shared by both these places The Southern Cross and North Star shine above in the sky And point the way to the Poles to those whose eyes look high Australia and Alaska top the world from end-to-end They share a frontier spirit and are known for making friends “Up Over” or “Down Under” doesn’t really matter much at all They are a world of difference, but the difference is really small. - Alison [This message has been edited by Alison (12-01-2008 02:24 AM).] |

Australia is so like where I live, and I love it there. (Especially the men) trust me! Anyway, loved your poem Alison, is this for a challenge, and if so what one? You caught the beauty of her well by the way. |

Took you long enough! (and it was well worth waiting for ) Ya done good, Alison. I'll forgive the questionable rhymes in lieu of the brilliant way you created the poem. Two ends of the world...the similarities and the differences. Your exploration of Austrailia and it's regions and customs is just what I was looking for. Congrats on a job well done. Take the rest of the day off! Roniece....just whistle |

My pleasure, Alison. The concept of the poem is masterful..Austrailia and Alaska - bookends..the similarities. It's a wonderful concept. Right now it's a very good poem. With the right rhythm and syllable counts it would be a GREAT one. |
