What Bosses Might Accomplish

Several years ago
During an interminable interview
The dapper gentle man
Who engaged in patent law,
asked,

“How do you perceive
your job
as a personal assistant?”

From somewhere,
The imp that lives inside me
Spoke up, saying…

“Like being married,
without the fringe benefits.”

He taught me how to breathe
In terms of paragraphs,
For his punctuation was stellar, and
His aplomb, of Bond quality.
He ran his office
Like a well-oiled machine.

Then there was the attorney
Who found the sound of quiet
Too distracting
So encouraged me to attend
Title classes, to become certified
So I might handle closings
At his side.
His work prospered
And it was never quiet again.

A proud moment
Was working for a man who said,
“If you can read the statutes,
you can practice law,”

and did everything in pencil except
execution of his name; a wizard
at adeptness, and a dinosaur
in the world of techno-new.

But he trusted me to run his office,
And I cried when I learned
Of his passing.

Then there was the gentle cowboy lawyer,
Who never overshadowed my thoughts
On how to make his practice better,

And we learned how to square dance
Effectively; a calm give and take
Of minds in motion;
Until he danced away to the highest order
As I smiled him on his way.

Later, I was reminded
Of the attorney who asked

How I perceived my work.

I have been fortunate, indeed.

~*~

When an attorney strives
To keep his name alive
He trusts in his belief
That in order to survive

He will, with some relief
Hand over papers and a brief
His requests ever clear
By knowing who’s the chief…

And if he has her ear,
She may then deign to revere
While with a touch of inherent class
To their work adhere.

But should he choose to sass
And with hard hand harass,
Then she shall soon be never more
For no one need be crass.

But there are some who will never bore
And working with them is never a chore;
You will aspire to retain her, ever more…
Yes, you may retain her, ever more.

LOL...this was written for a friend who is about to host "Bosses Night" in Ottawa, Kansas. How I managed to attempt a stab at Liz's challenge is beyond me...

Both were fun to read, I felt the first was much more personal to you, as less constricted by a certain meter and rhyme. Still the second was very masterful.

Enjoyed...

I enjoyed this.

Especially as someone in a similar profession.. I hope my journey in this goes as well.  :-)

I learned so much about you (your wirk) through this poast. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end. And as one of the queens of free verse, you did a great job at following the given rhymre scheme.
Thank you, sweet lady for participating

Sunshine,
I, too, enjoyed both of these ( the added glimpse into part of your character.) As a former boss, your stories echoed what I strived to acheive (albeit with mixed results). Some thought I was fair, others thought I was something I can't put in print.
Such is human nature. Myself, I'm as unsure as the day I was cast in that role. I work, I write, I breathe... and pretty much in that order. Thanks for these.
Doc

Thought you all might like to read the following:

quote:
Karilea -  Our Bosses Night went well, we had a Get Acquainted game during the social hour, then a  Spanish word game and someone else won a prize for actually knowing why Cinco de Mayo was celebrated...  We had a good catered meal and installation of officers.  A fun evening for all.

Thanks so much for the poem, we are going to include it in our next newsletter.  Everyone enjoyed it last night, laughed at the ‘without fringe benefits’ part.  You are so talented – wishing you much success with your writing.  Keep smiling my friend

So, I'm smiling...

This is a fine and clever write and how good to get that warm feedback.  KJ
