Hey, fellow students, how about writing another poem in the form of any poet you choose (must be well known and one who writes in form). You choose the poem and post it, or just the title, on your thread along with your own original poem in the same rhyme scheme and meter? Anybody interested? If so, let us know. Let's give the teacher a little break here Liz |

As an example, here is a poem I wrote a while ago in the rhythms of Poe, "The Raven", to be exact. You don't have to read the whole thing to get the idea, but here it is anyway. Next time, I'll pick a short poem. Anybody want to try? The Frost ones were beautiful! Of Knights and Castles There’s a tale that’s still is living, horror that is unforgiving Through the royal vein still sieving, words that flow in infamy Centuries past two youthful squires, boyhood friends in woods and mires Lit by heritage, the fire’s burning torch of chivalry Both with dreams to light the high and gallant torch of chivalry Sons of purest royalty In the days of kings and castles, knightly crest with golden tassels Two with blood as blue as summer skies were training duteously One of family,, different lineage, but the two would joust and scrimmage To portray the manly image that would set their spirits free Catching maiden’s eye with images that set their spirits free Training skills of chivalry Visions set upon the power, and the heights of fortress tower To be dubbed a knight to serve, protecting king and family Roses bearing thorn and thistle, wielding swords that slice and whistle Through the morning air like missiles, targeted for knighthood’s knee Handsome cousins, thorny roses, bowing on a squire’s knee Dubbed a knight of royalty Each a tough and youthful squire, now in honored knight‘s attire Armor, gauntlets, tunics bearing crest of royal family Both were skilled in equal measure, both were deemed the castle’s treasure Two young knights prepared to fight and battle any enemy Bearing crests of heritage passed down through genealogy Knighthood was their destiny But their friendship greatly withered, jealousy had slowly slithered From two hearts in love with one, sweet gem of principality By her beauty they were taken, friendship’s honor was forsaken Inner beauty was mistaken for her skin of ivory Soft and dainty were her lips and gentle face of ivory Tender face of royalty Both, her flirting eyes were sharing, both would challenge any daring Knight to joust for her attentions, and display their chivalry How her fluttering eyes pretended, loving gestures so intended Only to fulfill unmended illness born in infancy Madness in a mind fermenting since the days of infancy Behind a face of ivory Waiting for a burning ember, something she would long remember Burning ember that would flare into a hero’s ecstasy Then one day from out a tavern, came the rumors of a cavern Where there lived a fuming dragon, who emerged from deepest sea Born on land and lurking in the cold, cold waters of the sea Blowing fires of tyranny From the mountains highest ridges, past the gorge and long foot bridges Furious eyes had spotted this young maiden walking endlessly Holding two bright golden crosses, and illusion’s albatrosses Pacing back and forth across the castle’s highest balcony Soft and tender ivory feet that tread her chamber balcony Madness pacing to be free Dragon monster, breath of fire, eyes fixed on his one desire To attack the pacing maiden, lunatic of secrecy Spotted by the knights on duty, to protect the charming beauty And collect a handsome booty, and the hand of royalty Both adorned with every weapon, and their crests of dignity Crests of family royalty For a moment was forgotten, brewing hatred, ties grown rotten Now they fought together, these two cousin knights of chivalry Dragon fires flared and threatened, monster roaring blared and deafened But his might was greatly lessened by their ingenuity Two young knights who killed a dragon with their fine agility Blue blood bulging furiously Both were then rewarded greatly, feast of celebration stately Honoring the heroes, who now for her ivory hand compete Honored knight of her own choosing, one the winning, one the losing Both invited to attend the musing princess, at her feet Laughing to herself at these two fools, the cream of the elite Flaunting arrogant conceit On a night of clashing lightening, in her darkened chamber, frightening Shadows danced upon the walls where she was locked with iron key There she begged their knightly presence, to endow to one her essence One she would select to be the husband wed in royalty Blue with blue mixed in a marriage bound by solid royalty There alone the royal three As they knelt before her Highness, ivory face pretending shyness Hands behind her back were holding sharpened weapon rigidly Not a moment hesitated, two bowed heads decapitated Never lingered, never waited, just a slice deliberately Two beheaded knights, who haunt the castle halls eternally Knights with spirits running free Tales of horror, ghostly vision, live within this royal prison Chamber tainted with blue blood and essence of insanity Two young boys grew up together, rode the trails in any weather Knew the cliffs and fields of heather, wore the crest of family Handsome knights, two cousins bearing sacred crests of dignity Dubbed by sword’s insanity ~ by Elizabeth Santos July 26, 2003 |

On second thought, what about the idea of doing the above, a shorter poem of course, but making the theme be of Mother's Day or Memorial Day. What do you think? Anybody in? Liz |

You rock, Lady Santos... All righty then - searching for a favorite here... You're on, Liz - anybody else want to help in future months? This Sylvan stuff is pretty time consuming... |

Sounds good, wings, i'm so glad you are in this. I've got to get busy myself, and think about which poem I will be rhythmically imitating, but not until MOnday. Looking forward to reading some more of your beautiful poetry, everyone. Happy Mothers Day! Liz |

I just returned from vacation and I appologize for my lack of response, but I didn't even use a computer while I was gone, (that was a first) and so I will catch up on the forum within the next fer days. I see we have one diligent student in the class, and I will read hers tomorrow. DR Moose, it's never too late, my friend. Liz |
