All righty - Between my own personal chaos this month and my Mysterias houseguest, finding sufficient Passions time has surely been at a premium. I've managed to respond to most of you, but I know there are still some I've yet to uncover... My apologies and my gratitude - For your not taking this place by storm in Passionate mutiny...

Well then - It's JULY... Let's take on METER - That means we can stay in the sandbox - We'll write in whatever rhyme scheme we choose - but use a specific meter (of our own choosing again)... Who can be the most creative here???

Dear Teach,
Hoo boy! A challenge, you name 'em all, and I just might get my diploma yet! That is, unless you've got something up your sleeve that hasn't been covered (or un-covered), either way this could be fun !!

Poetic meter is not just a matter of syllable count - A poem that is written with a rhyme scheme, but still sounds "forced" is most likely not in proper meter - Conversely, a poem that "sings" to you will most likely be written with both intact - "rhyme and meter"

So, how to assess your meter? Here's a brief synopsis:
There are two elements to proper meter - the number of "feet" per line, and the pattern of "STRESSED/unstressed" syllables (ergo the syllable count thingy).

Let's start with the pattern of "STRESSED/unstressed" syllables - It's much more than just counting to make sure you have an equal number on each line. The patterns are?

...iambic - (short/LONG) - (e.g. - re-PLY')
...trochaic - (LONG/short) - (e.g. - REA'-son)
...anapestic - (short/short/LONG) - (e.g. - in-ter-FERE')
...dactylic - (LONG/short/short) - (e.g. - SYL'-la-ble)
...spondaic - (LONG/LONG) - (e.g. - HEART'BEAT')
...pyrrhic - (short/short) - (e.g. - darned if I know, this one's tough.. )

So, combine a rhythm of iambic, trochaic, or the like - with a specified number of "feet" (repetitions of stressed pattern) and you have a poetic rhapsody.

...monometer -
....One foot per line - (e.g. - "Be-HOLD!" - iambic monometer)
...dimeter -
....Two feet per line - (e.g. - "Re-FLEC-tions FOUND" - iambic dimeter)
...trimeter -
....Three feet per line - (e.g. - "Yes, it AL-ways takes TWO side by SIDE" -
......anapestic trimeter)
...tetrameter -
....Four feet per line - (e.g. - "TWIN-kle, TWIN-kle, LIT-tle STAR" - trochaic tetrameter)
......one syllable shy - btw -
...pentameter -
....Five feet per line - (e.g. - "Our VI-sion NOW be-STOWS the BLIND with SIGHT" -
......iambic pentameter) This format is used for any properly written sonnet
......(along with a specified rhyme scheme in 14 line format)
...hexameter = six feet
...heptameter = seven feet
...octameter = eight feet......

You'll need to choose one from each list - Such as.. iambic pentameter... or... trochaic tetrameter... or...  anapestic trimeter... or... spondaic monometer..OH BOY!!!..

Use whatever format you want, folks - But try to keep your meter constant.... Let's see what you can do with this..

Question: Does stress in sounds work differently for people from different parts of the world? I mean the way people speak the English language is far different in various parts of the world... does this change the perception of STRESSED sounds in a sentence or a line of poetry?

With my darkling
9 posted 2003-07-09 02:25 PM

Of darkling thoughts, and measured wrath
And tortured turns down twisting paths
Insanely, he begins to laugh
And starts to write my epitaph

Years went by, before I dared
To look inside and back he stared
By then too late,as if I cared
I simply sighed,  my burdens shared

So slow at first, he moved within
I paid slight notice of his whims
But madness started to descend
And darkling thoughts became my sin

No longer do I feel lifes' pains
My darkling now behind the reins

Not a new write, but interested to know if I stayed in form, and what meter this is.

Jason

Good question, Sudhir.  I sometimes speak backwards from others, stressing the wrong syllable...

I'll try to meter rhymes in flow
I'll try real hard before I go
But when I loose you will find me
Outside in sandbox number three

Like scattered leaves...my words will flow
