The passage of the years as yet not dims in part her memory
In single act of play was met what time shall never change nor quell
Far flung though scope of search was still all paled as were but scenery
for roles we played but once forever cast on me an actor's spell

No king would I have been that day to see it all end up as naught
were you my queen indiff'rent to what was professed upon that stage
I thank you now these years gone by for that one lesson painful taught
for it's affect upon my life remains impossible to gauge

Think me not bitter for this pill that in our youth you shared with me
that there are places that my love may somehow fall just short of reach
Compassion caused your tears to fall and they did so un-scriptedly
that anything there was to say was said in that kiss on the beach

And though rejection's pain did seem within that moment what would last
instead what did appear the whole in time became the smallest part
for long since faded is the wound you carved in me on that day past
and what remains for me is this now etched down in theses words from heart

A salt sweet taste of parting kiss as fresh as were it of this morn
The mist of tears seen in your eyes with which you shall remain adorned
This vision that I have sustained I've shared with none 'till now with you
recalled as thus we have not aged though youth and I've long bid adieu

Thirty-some years now in the past those tears of yours were shed for me
And that one kiss , both first and last ,has still inspired this poetry .

We all have that wonderful memory... that unfulfilled yearning for the "good one who got away"... Time doesn't change those feelings, does it?... The funny thing is.. Occasionally we run into them again... even thirty years later...

This is a wonderful poem... and, as you well know, Doc... It conforms beautifully to iambic octameter...

Suzanne ,
Thanks , even a furry old stinkin' thing like me can sometimes rise above his lowly beginnings .

Munda ,
Dang , even you aren't findin' fault with this one ? C'mon this is too easy !

Nan ,
I was going to say something flippant , instead I'll just say thanks .This one was true to the best of my colored recollection
( I do use the " Big Box " you know ).So there you have it , I'm a hope-less romantic,
and if you don't believe me just check out my next post.
Doc
