This is a 'get to know me' poem. This poem is more about me than anything I have ever written before in my life. Never in her 15 years of life, Has this girl felt so alone. Yet around here, people swarm, Comforting the body of a stranger. She does not know herself, But they proclaim to know all about her. Her mind swirls furiously, Trying to get a grip on a reality no one knows. Behind a mask she hides away, Protending to be someone she isn't. The strong outer cover shelters, Confused emotions deep inside. She is the one in the poems, The homeless girl in the street. The soul full of burden, A heart smashed in two. No one see's her cry, For the weaker being will prevail if so. She doesn't want to be weaker, For the image she has built up is strong. Who really knows her? When she doesn't even know herself? Forever she is always waiting, Alone in a world that is dark. What does she wait for? Perhaps someone who reads her soul? Someone who understands her, That isn't already far gone. She doesn't like to be judged, And hates the fact of betrayel. She is just like every other human on this land, Yearning for her slice of freedom. A freedom in which she alone, Will never know in her life. Forever she is trapped behind her mask, Wanting to escape from it all. The honesty and openness of this is very touching! I posted a poem in Dark Passions a few months back called "Parade of Masks". The last lines were: "So I play my game, my desperate game with a facade of assurance without and a trembling chill within And so begins the parade of masks, and my life becomes a front" Really enjoyed reading your poem. Hope you find that freedom you seek! dh <!signature--> A life isn't significant except for its impact on other lives. [This message has been edited by Danny Holloway (edited 05-12-2000).] |

Self-description can be difficult, but I think you did very well. No one can take that mask away but you. Good job. "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Oscar Wilde |

Thank you for your replies everyone. Lizzie: This group of people in here are the lucky ones because hardly anyone looks within me. ![]() Danny: I will be sure to look for that poem because if those last six lines are that good, so too must be the rest of the poem. ![]() I'll find my freedom that I seek soon. I just need to make some BIG changes. ![]() LoveBug: You are too right that self description can be hard but I figure the sooner you get it out, the sooner you are to completing yourself. Congrats on becoming a moderater by the way ![]() Deranger: It is always weird isn't it whenever you hear someone (or read in this instance) with the same feelings? In reading this kind of poems, I think that you get a better look at what kind of person the poet is and that is nothing but good. No probs for answering your request by the way. ![]() ~AF~ "Poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement." Christopher Fry |

It's tragic how alone we often feel in our lives..abandoned, forgotten...you've written a powerful poem here. I am extremely impressed. ![]() *Krista Knutson* ~We are only truly lost when we have lost ourselves~ |

Thanks for your comment Krista. ![]() I was feeling quite alone when I wrote this piece so it is not at all shocking that these emotions came through. It is quite a compliment to hear that you are "extremely impressed" with my work. ~AF~ "Poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement." Christopher Fry |
