winter settles in to stay in a blanket of icy air that seeps over the earth in creeping fingers of frost as I hop rug to rug to my dresser, to my special emergency stash with a creak I pull open a long closed drawer my nose wrinkling from a musty smell a faint odor of moth balls assaults my nose too while numb fingers dig through mismatched pairs of striped pink socks one rainbow hued multi-toed mate a knee high woolen creation in brilliant blue my toes aching for some comfort socks carelessly scattering under my frantic hands rudely tossed from summer's repose to the chilly wood floor in my search for a fluffy warm matched pair my bare feet cry out for some comfort and I think, "what the heck" and grab a yellow woolie and pair it with a zebra striped slipper sock sighing in relief as I slip them upon frigid toes feet softly thumping down stairs of icy wood as I settle back by the fire all cozy with my book and a steaming mug pretending to ignore a hilarious questioning glare that is being cast upon my warming toes by my giggling (soon to be glared back at) true love |
