Candles
by © Richard J. Budig 1997

Let it be said that we were met
I don’t remember where or when
We talked of this and that
We talked of hopes and dreams
And soon enough we were friends
Telling lives that simply were
Not quite full and not quite empty
I shed tears of joy for you
Tears that too soon I will shed again
And you, you laughed with glee
As I laid out my life’s depravity
And through it all
We hugged and kissed
Because we were friends
And we loved each other
Unaware, until now, that we are young
Only in our hearts and minds
And that when we were young
We thought ourselves old
And, sadly, only now do we realize
That youth was once truly ours
Let me hold your hand once again
Be my cherished friend a moment more
For soon enough the time that is ours
Will pass away like candles upon the altar
