It used to be a stately street
The houses kept quite clean
And friendly folks you'd always meet
-Before the streets turned mean.

The children used to laugh and play
From morning until night
But now the laughter's gone away
-Replaced by urban blight.

High hopes once held were blown away
By bureaucratic schemes
Those harbingers of vast decay
-Have slaughtered many dreams.

That once fine street has died somehow
It has no trace of hope
The trash-strewn street is barren now
-Cast on the downward slope.

And bureaucrats live far away
Their neighborhoods unscathed
So far removed from blight, decay
-From streets that they have made.

I agree, Denise. Got too much of that all over the place.
Nicely done.

Very nice. Your poetry always flows so perfectly and conveys its message equally well.

Scary, isn't it? I'm in the process of leaving a country area to an urban area after four years of peace...Don't know if I have it in me anymore...The noise, the crime, the worrying about your kids....

Nicely done!

Scary and sad, when you aren't safe in the old neighbourhood anymore. Great work

I live on such a street... and it is scary... especially for the old folks who remember better days and now are trapped in a place where pizza shops won't even deliver. *S* Well done!

I know of so many streets such as these - You're so right - The best point, in my opinion, is that the bureaucrats build it, and then live elsewhere!

A sad and terrible reality.

I love to read those stories of people who are tired of this, and "take back" their neighborhood!

You wrote it well Denise, thanks.
