777 Seventh child of a seventh child Born, turn of century A staid Irish Family New northern city Willowy wondrous child Uneasy parents looked on Mischievous Madeline Willful spirit strong Parents died, she was seven Orphanages, the other six Only she was adopted Cinderella complex Unpredictable and wild Danced, sang in Vaudeville Poured scorn on the norm Willful spirit strong still Her portrait on my piano, Top hat and cane Preserved in silver Willful spirit reigns Dancer’s legs, untamed hair Dazzling toothy smile Hated her big nose so Every picture she defiled Monster inside her mirror Burned with artistic need Self-expressionism Made ugliness recede Met a man at a party, he Planned the Panama Canal And trains for foreign countries She was taken in by it all Nice enough, hearty laugh Asked for her hand one day The safe life in New York But hubby was often away One night she saw him In Manhattan, midtown Kissing his secretary Willful spirit tearing down Divorce never a question Not this middle class home Catholic desperation clings The affair continued on No usefulness or purpose Not in her estimation She extinguished life Willful desperation Madeline is not discussed It just isn’t done In this Irish family Willful spirits come undone © 1999 Corinne Bailey |
