It glimmers with promises like ice cubes in a glass, the soul melts away from this disease's painful grasp. She was once known, beautiful to all who saw. Where has she gone? To this disease's gaping maw. We wonder why she doesn't seem the same. A year, has it been that long? Is it time for a change? Her kids are all grown, we moved away. Is it our fault? We were the ones that left her alone. Have another drink... no really, it's ok. Turn the other cheek, pay no attention to the sway. My fury unfolds, do they realize what they do? The enabelers abound, what would they think if they were wearing the shoe? I use to know her, I really think I did. Now I'm not so sure, doesn't really matter...I'm just her kid. What can I do? Does this ever end? What should I do? What pain will this rend? Does it even matter...that I'm her kid? |

You've asked questions in this poem that, unfortunately, so many have asked....and still have not found answers for. I can answer one..perhaps. Is does indeed matter that you are her kid. Even if this poem isn't specifically about you. Yes, it matters. |

Sally S. and Krystal - Thank you for your comments, they mean a great deal to me! You've made a new member feel very welcome. The poem is a bit rough around the edges, but it truly reflects some of the feelings I have experienced. Alchoholism is a disease that affects everyone involved, not just the one doing the drinking. |

I think you know just how much it does matter!! As you stated that alchoholism is a disease, just like diabeties, only the treatments are different, here is just another time in life where sometimes the Child is the parent, as much as we the child need to feel love and be told we are loved so does the parent.. so don't ever stop loving or showing love, for it is that hope of love that will fill us, and make us a stronger person.. Oh yes it matters .. break the chain. |

Satiate, You wrote this so well, for a painful topic. It is sad to think all the damage alchohol can cause, to the abuser, and the people in their lives. I hope things have gotten better for you. |

I have experienced this first hand myself.I have seen the damage it can do.I have also seen total breakup of families. The children are the ones that hurt the most out of it. |
