When I landed in Vietnam,
I hardly got to see Saigon.
They lined us up and called the role,
And off we went on long patrol.

The Captain called a halt that night,
And we had chow by the pale moonlight.
A lovely dinner they planned for us,
With a taste like a seat on a cross-town bus.

A couple of the fellas was tellin' jokes,
A few of the guys started to smoke,
I took a whiff as the cloud rolled by
And my head went up like an infield fly.

I said I may be crazy, but I think not,
I'd swear to God that I smelled pot,
But who'd have pot in Vietnam?
They said what ya think ya been sittin' on?

Tiny little plants....a million and twenty,
All around....fields of plenty.

Well the time came as it comes to all,
When I had to answer nature's call,
I was stumblin' around in the moon-lit haze,
Met a little dude in black "P-J's"

(ammo belt....B.F. Goodrich sandals)

He said our squad's campin' down the pass,
Smell your squad blowin' grass,
And by the smell you're smokin' trash,
Brought you a taste of a special stash....

(straight from uncle Ho's Victory gardens..call it Hanoi Gold)

Well his squad and my squad settled down,
Passed some lovely stuff around,
All too soon it was time to go,
the Captain got on the ra-dee-o
and said;
"Hello headquarters. We have met the enemy, and he has been smashed!

This was a popular thinggie in the good old days!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ya got any of that good stuff left? *G* Can I take you to lunch? LOL. Great poem, sweets!

On a serious note... in spite of being underage, I worked at Fort Polk and saw firsthand so many leaving for Vietnam... and saw different men return home. However they managed to endure... God bless our vets!

This can't possibly be from experience! Didn't you tell me you just turned 21! Good poem about a time that few understand or want to remember.
