haiku... Wild geese flying south; shadows that cross the moonlight cross the water, too. The shadows lengthen; morning leaves a fringe of frost on front porch pumpkins. Sudden silence so deep even crickets hesitate. Crossing the river, that old man carries the moon on his shoulder. An early frost and a single cicada to sing me to sleep tanka... we the sun and moon spinning in a dance of words - I covet your light. Take my hand in yours, pull me into your gravity field. ------------------ "We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.....the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?" --John Keating, Dead Poets Society |

I LOVE THESE!!! Whew ... (straightening my skirt) ... ahem, I love haiku, can't write them worth a darn, but having the talent to say so much in so few syllables is truly amazing. You have my respect, Beki. Nocht PS: My favorite was the 4th haiku ... what a vivid pagan image! ------------------ "Nunc lento sonitu dicunt, morierus" (Now as I hear this bell tolling softly for another, it says to me, "Thou must die.") |

Thanks everyone. Nocht, there is a little story about that poem. I wrote it several years ago. Last year Disneyland implemented the new Mulan parade. The end of the parade is a float that is meant to be an old man, wise man...very tall, with a large lighted globe floating along behind his head...meant to be the moon I am sure. First time I saw it I freaked ..."MY GOD! It's my poem!" my sister didn't understand of course..but everytime I watch the parade I smile to see my haiku personified.I visit Disneyland frequently...love the place and I have an annual pass. :-) |
