I watched your hand reach out to me and shrank back from your touch.
I see the question in your eyes …"forgive me?" ……you ask to much.
Minutes slowly passed it seemed, but was just seconds in reality.
I watched the wide arch of your arm as you struck out at me.

Angry words just spoken seemed to hang there in the air.
The silence throbbed around me, such hatred in your stare.
I didn’t recognize the man who vowed to love and cherish.
Saw only the beginning to the end of our few years of marriage.

Took just moments for me to realize that this would not end here.
This has all been building, saw signs several times this year.
Your growing bouts of anger, slamming doors and then your gone.
Me begging for forgiveness never knowing what I’d done wrong.

You growing bolder with each submission that in fear I’d show.
For each weakness I revealed to you the stronger you would grow.
Now standing here above me forgiveness is what you seek.
Felt strength in your swing moments ago, yet now realize that your weak.

For it takes a stronger man then you to control a fit of anger.
Its the man who lets emotion rule that poses any danger.
Though it will break my heart in half to walk away from you.
Your actions left two options and leavings what I choose.

You wouldn’t beg for me to stay if you could read my mind.
If I were you, I wouldn’t lay by me, cause you gotta sleep sometime.

I hope this is not a real life experience for you. Sadly, it is far to common an event in our world today. Well written. I like the closing.....You got to sleep sometime.

Contemplating a little Bobbet action are we?

No thank God! The love of my life has never laid an "abusive" hand on me. I have been trying lately to put myself in someone else's shoes. Though we can say what we would do in this situation...I think if I were faced with this problem...I would do as a lot of women do. I would probably stay, its a sad truth, but a fact nonetheless.

Lucie, you have captured the essence of life in an abusive situation. Very well done piece on a very sad and usually quite hopelss situation. I wanted to respond to this the other day when I read it, but I wanted to gather my thoughts. I lived like this for 14 years. Out of a sense of obligation to my wedding vows and out of hope that a miracle would happen and things would somehow work out. I regret subjecting my children to this unstable environment, even though they have turned out fabulously, they deserved better. So did I. I finally told God that I had tried all that I could, I couldn't try any longer and it was time to leave (or die). I wasn't ready for that. Even though we had to live 'undercover' for two years, the Great Escape was worth it. I now have a wonderful husband and a very peaceful environment. You have written a very powerful piece that I hope will help someone who needs help to make the right decision. From experience I can tell you that things will NOT get better. Do whatever you have to do to get OUT. You deserve to have a normal life.

Lucie

Walking in someone else’s shoes is an art in itself. Running in full flow and keeping perfect balance, as you have done in this poem takes pure skill and care.

Well done.

But I myself may serve to show it. That every fool is not a poet.

dsnyder.. I applaud you! I watched my best friend from high school go through this from a distance. I had to call her mom to find out how she was because her husband allowed her to only speak to her parents. It was a long 3 1/2 years and 3 children later when she finally called me from the woman's shelter I cried like a baby and gave thanks that she had the strength to finally walk away. And now 7 years later she is a happy well balanced woman in a very happy marriage.

To all who read and responded .. thank you!
