The Sham

If we consider life a gift,
then why not death as well?
Or else to Him a shorter shrift
our actions' stories tell.
Is judiciously planning for you,
destroying that work the next,
capricious, futility to ensue,
Design in sane context?

Suppose we name this life, prayer,
and death we call, amen,
then faith becomes an active player,
whose fruit matures 'til, when
with unexplained largesse, He pours
into a raptured soul,
the sight of heaven's opened doors,
creation's final goal.

A shameless sham that death we fear,
each man in his own way,
when what He has by faith made clear,
immortal holiday!
No more hang back in sullen rage
despairing earthly toil,
your best is yet to come, engage
the eyes on heaven's soil!

You have spoken something here I have believed all my life, H. Arlequin, but have never quite been able to put in words. And you have done very gracefully to boot.
Wonderful, wonderful piece. Many thanks to you.

Michael

I really enjoyed this one, even all the more so after reading the Eve poems. Shameless sham and shorter shrift are such great words together in the same poem. But perhaps the best is the last line of the first verse... wow!... what a play on words there!

Tx DA, Denise, and snow
for your encouraging comments. I want you to know they come at a time when a thoughtful word was the perfect prescription for a case of the blahs. :-))))
