Because seven is a mystic number. Their tale will be told just as it unfurled. Ancient myths will be wakened from slumber. The Mediterranean bordered Six. Babylon lay in the Fertile Crescent. All were betrayed by time and it's conflicts. The voices of the past lie quiescent. The great pyramid outlasted time. standing throughout history. First of the seven means first in rhyme, it's past reeks of mystery. It's a tomb for the Pharoah Cheops, who was Egypt's greatest king. Thieves have stripped away all of it's props, leaving it a ravaged thing. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, were truly things of beauty. With the majestic grace of a swan, 'twas a tribute to duty. Remembered only in poet's verse, the knowledge of them is lost. They held creatures and plants so diverse, you could not measure the cost. Olympia's great statue of Zeus, was made of ivory and gold. Honoring him was it's only use, if the truth is to be told. This god-like treasure died in fire, five hundred years after Christ. The thought of it's loss raises my ire, though it's history has sufficed. The temple of Artemis is next, the loveliest of them all. What we know of it comes from old text, that speaks of this goddess' hall. Four times the temple has been rebuilt, razed as it was by plunder. Those conquerors should be cursed by guilt, for tearing it asunder. At Halicarnassus was a tomb, fit to be a museum. The Holy Crusades did seal the doom, of this first mausoleum. Gilding of gold and alabaster, were the least of it's treasures. This one also fell to disaster, to feed sadistic pleasures. Proudly stood the Colossus of Rhodes, to Helios a tribute. A symbol it became of crossroads, to honor an old dispute. An earthquake broke the statue apart, shattering it at the knee. The loss of beauty tears at the heart, yet such was it's destiny. Alexandria had it's lighthouse, a beacon of hope at night. To it's grace and beauty I espouse, it burned an eternal light. Once the tallest structure on this earth, great quakes toppled it as well. A thing of immeasurable worth, of it's loss it's hard to tell. Each of the seven was torn asunder. I've told how their loss made the world barren. This I dedicate to my own wonder. Very nice poem! I have to say though the pyramids have always held my curiosity. I don't mean to get off of who it was written for, but the subject I have to say this on... 7 is the number of spiritual completeness, it just strikes me as funny of the 7 that you mention here. As they are worshipped as gods, they were torn down. "There are no other Gods besides ME." It says in the Bible. Just had to say that... |

Dreamie Terrific poem... to tell you the truth, I couldn't have named all seven wonders on a bet. This was a great reference. There is a theory that the Great Pyramid and the other two pyramids actually predate Cheops by many thousands of years. Their relationship to one another coincides with Orion's Belt about 23,000 years ago. The technical excellence in their construction (as well as the Sphinx) is not reflected in anything else the Egyptians attempted in later dynasties. The theory about who built the pyramids points to an earlier human civilzation that was destroyed by global cataclysm. For more information on this subject, may I recommend Graham Hancock's, "Fingerprints of the Gods"? An interesting read, true or not. |
