Awash Hot water streamed from the tap filling the plastic dish with clouds of soapsuds. The dirty plates clanked as they sank on top of one another. The pile of dirty plates had been growing for a whole week, initially just filling the sink it expanded into a tide of dirty cutlery and crockery, washing over and covering every work surface. A week later every single item they owned, an impressive array of kitchen utensils, pots, pans, cutlery and crockery lay used and unwashed in their kitchen. Matthew had reached the end of his tether, that morning he had eaten his Corn Flakes out of a mug using a fork, try as he might he just couldn’t ignore it anymore. The washing up had to be done and as usual he would have to do it himself. Once he had resigned himself to the fact, Matthew was rather happy. Secretly and despite his protestations to the contrary he enjoyed doing it, especially when he could surprise the rest of his housemates. He could even enjoy it, with a little music and some questionable singing, it was possible from him to switch his mind off from university work that he should have been doing. Matthew had dug out an old CD-R from a pile of CD cases scattered across his desk, one of many he had traded with an ex-girlfriend, this one however was special and he loved every single song on. He didn’t hear Jamie come in, so intent had he been on getting the washing done and the kitchen reorganised, the first he knew about her was when the music was cut off abruptly; then he saw her in the door. She smiled at his singing but he could tell that she was upset. “Matthew you really shouldn’t do that you know.” she said, he began to feel guilty then wondered why; he was doing everyone else a favour, including Jamie. He had the fewest hours of lectures, only one seminar and no hours of studio work like the rest of his flatmates. “Yeah but if I don’t do it, then it won’t get done.” he replied, desperately trying to scrub the dried remains of a meal he couldn’t identify from the plate he held in his hand “Its not like anyone else does the washing up around her.” “I wash up” Jaime protested, visibly hurt that he would forget her efforts to keep the house tidy. She was right; she did as much in keeping things clean if not more. “Yeah sorry, I meant everyone other than us” he said apologetically “Its just frustrating at times.” “You should just leave it for them.” Jamie replied, a hint of anger in her voice. “Its not your job to clear up after the rest of us.” “But it won’t get done” he protested “besides I kind of like doing it, its kind of therapeutic, I can come in here stick some music on, and just relax.” “Therapeutic?” she asked “Compared to writing essays all day, yeah, it helps clear my mind. Besides if I leave it how long until it gets done?” he said. “You just don’t want to do any work.” She said grinning. “Yeah that too.” He looked at her, standing in the doorway. A grin forming on his face “Well are you going to help me or not then?” |
