Three blocks from my house, I smelled rain. Someone was having a barbeque. I heard thunder roll. Two blocks away, the hairs on my arms began to crawl. As I approached the halfway point, lightning struck immediately in front of me. Blinded, I staggered the final block to my house, rubbing my eyes, the stench of sulfur filling my nose. Fuzzy lines connected to form the shape of my house before me as the smell of sulfur was slowly replaced with that of my burning home. Before I could blink again, the bottom fell out. I have never experienced rain as heavy as that day – the fire was extinguished quickly. My eyes were yet to blink – the sky opened up and a rainbow appeared over my house. My vision was perfect – a rainbow rose high over my home and disappeared into the clouds far away. Much closer, perfectly framed in the rainbow, a tornado approached. ©2003 Fink L.
