part 2 She had come down around 1 a.m. wondering why she felt a chill, and why the other side of their sleighbed was empty. Walking the stairs she found the note, taped to the backdoor...and just stood there, petrified, feeling like someone had punched her in the stomach and she couldn't breathe. There was only one other time she felt this way, two years before when her Father caught a rare disease and she watched over the next few months as his strong body disintegrated in front of her. Both times, no tears would flow, because she couldn't believe either was happening to her. She prayed and asked God what had she done in life to be punished this way. But there was never an answer, leaving her to dwell in her sorrows and wonder each and every day how she would get through the pain of not knowing the answers. She walked through a mist, her life losing its meaning, struggling to have composure but those around her could not or maybe would not help. They didn't even offer because she shut them and the rest of the world out, not answering the phone, not opening mail, not receiving company. And if others were worried, she never knew it, because in her own mind she had been abandoned twice and was beginning to self-destruct. She was old enough, mature enough in most ways, but had been sheltered from the evils of city living, and had given up any vices long ago. Drinking had split them apart, yet during those first few weeks she wished she could tolerate enough to put her in a stupor, to make her forget that those echoes in the house, were hers alone.
