Chocolate versus Pound

To say the least, a lot of women, myself included, are inclined to overlook the best in favor of the worst.  Like the choices we make in our personal relationships - a matter of excitement and passion over stability and occasional boredom.  Like the chocolate cake over the pound cake.

The chocolate is a passionate creation of rich, dark lusciousness that tempts even the most strong-willed. A classic contradiction.  It taunts you with its soft moistness, whilst the aroma uplifts you, wafting you to a new sense of awareness.  You are excited by the high that is promised in each delicious morsel.  Your mouth drools in anticipation.  You feel you cannot wait for the first bite.

The icing is creamy and thick - a visual delight of peaking wantonness.  It entices you.  Your finger is lured to dip into the deep frosting.  Like a fugitive you peer behind you, hoping that no one saw you.  Then slowly raising your finger to your lips, you taste it, you are seduced by its apparent innocence, its sweetness and flavor.  With a smile you allow your taste buds to take control, and you instantly know that one slice will not be enough.

The chocolate cake beckons you wickedly.  The temptation is by far, a lot stronger than you are.  You indulge, loving every pleasurable mouthful, and yet to the point of hating yourself.  The calorie count of one slice of this devilish joy is nearly more than your allotted calories for the day.  The taste and the richness of the cake excite you, and so you are inclined to inhale it, leaving neither crumb nor dollop of creamy icing on your plate.

With a rascally gleam in your eye you help yourself to another slice.  No matter that you have, knowingly, had more than enough.  Good sense is overtaken lustfully and temptingly by the desire brought on by a sugar high.  Helplessly and greedily you reach out for more.

Later, after excessive over-indulgence you note that you are having headaches, your skin is breaking out and your clothes fit a little snugger than normal.  You hate yourself for the abuse you put your bodily system through.  The chocolate cake has envisioned delights, which are hard to resist, regardless of your knowledge of the poisonous after-effects.  The obsession with the cake is an immaturity that you seem unable to outgrow.  Or can you?

Let us look at the pound cake, how pale it is in comparison. So plain to look at, it does not exactly get your juices flowing.  It is certainly not the eye riveting attention getter that the chocolate is.  It is very easy to overlook, even easier to resist.  Modestly it hides its assets beneath a cloak of innocence.  Apparently there is nothing evil, captivating or poisonous about this loaf of golden cake.  No icing in which to dip your finger and seductively lick off.  No temptation that cannot be resisted, and the calorie count, in spite of being made with a pound of butter, is somewhat less than the evil, passionate chocolate.  It is subdued, mellow, quiet in taste and certainly not the preference of the first choosing.

How mundane, simple and every dayish - or is it?  It can be an asset to your eating pleasures three meals a day.  Toasted its aroma is very enticing, served with marmalade and a side of eggs it makes a hearty breakfast.  It can serve as the ever-popular French toast, smothered in warm, thick maple syrup.  Sliced thinly and piled high with fine slices of ham, accompanied by fresh fruit and cheese, it makes a delectable luncheon platter.  Eat it with preserves, or pile it high with those same fresh fruits, with cream, instead of cheese and you have a light desert.  It is always available, like 'Johnny on the spot'.

Enjoy it without any added attractions and it adds flavor to your beverage by not being overpowering.  It has a surprisingly clean, pleasant, mild taste.  You can enjoy it knowing that it is not addictive to the point of destruction.  Filled with wholesome goodness it can be used and enjoyed without the obsessions brought on by the powerful chocolate.

Made with butter and eggs it lacks the luster of the dark, intimidating offspring of the cacao bean.  What it lacks in glitter it makes up for in other qualities that are often overlooked.  It is not destructive, does not overpower you.  It is easy on you, allows you leeway and freedom to experiment and is readily available to you.  It is also, as your mother would put it 'just plain good eating'.  Ever dependable it is without a doubt far better for you than the chocolate, which obviously will mean that you naturally prefer the latter.

There are times in our lives when the choosing of our partner(s) compares similarly to our choice of cake.  Invariably the chocolate is first choice.  Sometimes it takes a long time before the lesson is finally learnt, that being, that it is far, far better to live with the solid, always there pound cake.  Life is so much easier when you live guilt and temptation free.  It is so easy to fall prey to the seduction of the chocolate cake, smooth, vain and glossy, it is in a class all of its own.  One taste of this sinner is all it need take for you to desire more and more.

On the other hand the pound cake can fulfill your need.  Satisfy your craving for the sweeter side of life.  The big trick is to look past the stability and fantasize about what it can be with a little help from your imaginative self.  Eventually the fact that the chocolate will leave you blemished, fatter and with a bad taste in your mouth will hit home.  That's the time when you will know that your self-destroying obsession is over with - hopefully.

After comparing the pros and cons for both items you should be able to say with pride, untold enthusiasm and without fear of contradiction  'LONG LIVE THE POUND CAKE'.

This is a very intruiging and entertaining comarison and contrast piece.  Not to mention the sweet metaphore for life.  I thuroughly enjoyed reading this.

Okay! I admit it, I'm a chocolate cake type of gal myself.  Fun piece - the write, not the cake.

I'm a reader - not a writer.
