I knew this was going to happen once I let it happen. The nature of Passions is such that profanity is not allowed in poetry. This does include all those variations I've been seeing recently and while I don't want to start deleting (yet), I do ask all poets to show some discretion and some self-restraint. Personally, profanity is up there with some of those overused words I mention all the time-- they fail in their intended function in a poem. Like "I woke up and it was all a dream" endings, profanity works one time but once you've read it (for me, E.E. Cummings, ninth grade), it loses whatever power it has -- be a poet and write something more original. I'm not blaming or accusing or attacking any one person here. It's nobody's fault but my own but please, in the future, choose more appropriate language. Of course, if you disagree, I'm always open to debate but if you wish to use profanity in that debate, could you e-mail me? the ogre, Brad |

I agree with you Brad that profanity, outuses its usefulness. But, in some cases, it works, if its being highlighted for something let's say, being used as a prop. I do agree though, if its just thrown in a poem, without respecting its weight, its pointless, but if its used as an object, as a reference point, it has its uses. Unfortunately, from the poems, I think you may be referring to, you are right, the profanity is not used carefully, but it isn't to say, that it can't be. quote: |

Brad, I sincerely apologize if I broke any of the rules of the forum in my reply to one of the poems. I could plead ignorance, as I was not aware of the rules, but then, it is my fault for not reading them. Again, I am truly sorry, but though I, personally, do not use profanity, just like archaic language, it has it's place. OOPS! I know ... e-mail. Sorry Brad. Won't let it happen again. Promise. If any one was offended by "Scream" please accept my deepest apologies. The words were used poetically as a tool to emphasize emotion. Once again, sorry. J.L.H. Jason I...I have seen the best minds of my generation... --Allen Ginsberg |

There are two words, that are the most powerful in the English language. One is "Why?" The other one is a four letter word that has been banned by the hosts of this board. I don't disagree with your ban or your right to ban. But -- the thought that, that word, could ever lose it's potency is absurd. Tarentino has made a fortune with it. |

Well, I disagree by principle, but I understand, so I'll go along. I'm also not in the mood to start some big controversy, and since I rarely use profanity in poetry anyway I won't argue. But if you're up for a debate, email me b/c I do feel strongly on this.
