OK, I know this really doesn't belong in CA but since this is where I spend most of my time, I will post it here anyway.

                  The Election

Once upon a campaign dreary, one which left us weak and weary
Over many a quaint and curious promise of political lore,
While we nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a yapping,
As of some votes overlapping, fraught with tension to the core
"'Tis a mess here," we all muttered, brought about by Bush and Gore.
"Just a mess, and nothing more."

Ah distinctly we remember, it was in that bleak November
When each seperate dying ember of our minds could take no more.
"Yes, a mess" again we muttered, as the network anchors stuttered,
"That's not fair" the lawyers uttered of the votes in Bush v. Gore.
Could it be when votes are counted and recounted Bush beat Gore?
Quoth the lawyers, "Nevermore."

More to come later (maybe)

Pete:

I like it.

Sunshine:

See Brad's post in Philosophy 101.  Then imagine a nationwide recount (a likely event in a one-person/one-vote system).  I prefer limiting the number of disaster areas to three counties.

Later.

Jim

P.S. "... his dreams of pregnant chads galore"

P.P.S. My off the cuff contribution.

Pete,

Very clever, indeed, my friend. Ahhh, but wouldn't Poe roll over (about the subject matter...not your writing)?

Sunshine, I'm afraid Jim is right about the nation-wide recount. And Jim, I like your contribution. I will try to extend this thing and add all those little goodies. I just wanted to get this quickie out here just in case this situation gets settled today, ROTFLMAO at that possibility.

Ok, here's a little more. Anyone feel free to jump in here and add a bit if you want. I might help with the frustration factor and the ever mor boring wait.

Presently the scene grew tenser as the plot grew even denser,
“Count the ballots, count again” until the winner is Al Gore.
Dimples, scratches from the marker might be made a little darker,
Surely now the simple voter meant to make his mark for Gore ,
Presidential candidate with dreams of pregnant chads galore
Can’t the winner be Al Gore?

Though it suited not their palates, millions marked and cast their ballots --
“Close it is. Too close to call” it’s what the networks said before.
So with that we watched and waited for results though now ill-fated
By the calls of over-rated networks at their hopeless chore.
When the votes were in and counted, by the law then Bush beat Gore.
Democrats could take no more.

“Count again”, the cry was shouted, and the candidate just pouted,
As the final count was touted. “Take it to the courthouse door.”
Change the rules to meet our query, mission now is Bush to bury,
Just don’t count the military, technicalities galore.
In the end we must prevail, otherwise we’ll sue some more.
President-elect Al Gore.

because it is in CA I will respond in that way...

I LOVE the meter and rhyme in this piece, and find the topic both funny and ridiculous (being British I am sufficiently far removed from it as to get an outsiders view..... actuall thinking about it, that might be the same with most americans)

I have the feeling the poem will not be complete till early next year though as the ending is not yet decided.  may I suggest writing two conclusions, one where bush wins, and one where gore gets his way?

and then send it off to some seriously heavy publications..... this is good enough to amuse the world!

Pete...

This is so delicious...you should send it to one of the networks. I bet it would get airtime.

Thanks Pete, I got my daily chuckle on this one. But I live in Florida, Volusia County to be exact, and the thing has become a blooming drudgery.  There's nothing left to watch on TV!  I'm now down to watching re-runs on the Cartoon channells with my nine month old daughter, at least they don't pretend to any modicum of seriousness, and hey.  I'd vote for Bugs any day over those two losers! Cheers.

pete

this was hilarious - even more so for a Brit - can i mail it to the BBC please?  ...lol  (actually i'm semi-serious?)

just one thing, it's kind of a pity it doesn't match the level of surrealism that's actually taking place ....

thanks for the laugh

Thanks Kevin, Kristine, Yeshujah and Philip. I'm glad you guys got a bit of a chuckle from this. At least it was a short break from the constant BS coming from the tv and other news media (I use the term news lightly).

Philip, I would be pleased to see this broadcast by the BBC or anyone else for that matter. So feel free to send it if you are so inclined. Please do ask them to give proper credit though.

Now, I have added one more stanza and still would appreciate suggestions from anyone.

Then the justices presiding Florida’s Supreme Court chiding
Bush to wait, they’ll count by hand, another week and five days more.
Damn the law, it’s too confusing, democrats were not perusing
Ballots, so they’re now refusing counts of votes from counties four.
Counting ballots and their dimples where the voters wanted Gore.
Laws and fairness, nevermore.

Thanks all,
Pete

OMG ...

This is classic -- you may not be a poet, but you certainly are a comic genius!

Will be back soon, hopefully with a verse or two to add!

What I'm liking more and more about this one, Pete, is that you could make a career out of this thing.  I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what you have to write about the US Supreme Court decision.

Still following this one with interest, Pete.

Elyse...Pete,

Elyse,
You love German? Took two years of it, and still can't speak it. In fact I barely remember any at all...

Pete...Sprechen zie Deutch? Wie gehts? Ich bin wunderbarrrrrrr! Ich liebe this poem...but boy am I sick of this recount business already. Our supreme court justices are quite a boring lot. Be glad when they're done with it.

OK, here's a little more. Now how about some help to finish this thing?

Somehow Bush was still ahead so counters in Miami said, "No,
That's enough, it's hopeless here and we're not counting anymore."
Broward County kept on counting as the standards kept on changing
And the counters kept arranging votes where none were seen before,
Ballots fondled, votes construed as chads were scattered o'er the floor.
Questioned ballot? "Vote for Al Gore."

"Wait!", said one in Seminole, "Republicans have played a role
Here and Martin County too that wrongs the system even more."
Seems the ballot applications had some minor variations
And in questioned situations someone was assigned the chore,
Put the numbers on the form, a crime too great to now ignore.
Count those ballots, nevermore.

Boies examined every flyer, legal fees soared ever higher,
Many votes were manufactured but it seemed they needed more.
All was coming to an ending, Bush's lawyers still defending,
Courts and judges always rending verdicts set against Al Gore,
Verdicts and decisions aimed to spare the public any more
Counting dimples for Al Gore.

Then those justices presiding once again for Gore deciding
Bush must wait to count again, count the votes by hand once more.
Count the dimples and the scratches, count the punches and the misses,
Guess the voters fondest wishes, count like never done before.
Standards really aren't important, count them all as votes for Gore.
Laws and fairness, nevermore.

Well, I guess it's about time to wrap this up so here is my version of the finish. Anyone who has an alternative or other suggestions or additions is of course encouraged to speak up.

The final stanza:

But the count of votes was broken when those awesome words were spoken:
"Stop the count! Off with their heads! We'll tolerate this farce no more.
Equal shelter you're declining by your means for goals divining,
You must set some rules defining how to count those votes for Gore."
Time was gone though, as it happened, naught to do but post the score,
Now, at last it's "No more Gore."
