The Desert Oasis By Paul Wilson The desert never sleeps Scorching hot in day time Freezing cold at night Those that dwell there adapt In order too survive Moon and stars illuminate The night sky Off in the distance Howl of a lonely gray wolf Breaks silence of the night Daylight awakens a new world Around desert oasis As wildlife comes to quench their thirst Sunlight brings unbearable heat As darkness again consumes the land Secrets buried under the sand Sun bleached bones of those That never reached their destination Covered by blowing sand with their hopes and dreams Glowing lights from distant city beckon Fortunes to be made or lost by many Homeless beg for next meal Or something more appealing The price they pay measured in lives In this desert oasis where some come to hide To become another lost soul Walking the streets at night Looking for that next pot of gold Following their dreams Mountains hold tales of buried treasure Lost by pioneers from beyond the drifting sand On their way to a better life Death... worn out backs and calloused hands The price paid by most Desert oasis replenished by much needed rain Bringing renewed life to all The circle of live repeats itself As the moon gives hope To a better time copy righted 7/4/21 ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ |

You capture the lonely sands by day that break into life we may not see, ...in a good prose like form..I have often been attracted to the inhospitable desert lands you convey well Paul. |

This was beautiful to me Paul in so many ways. Having spent the better part of the last 11 years working in the desert, I know it well and see much within it... "the cycles of life" you speak of. The falling of the bodies, bones picked clean by scavengers, then sun bleached over time, until ultimately, they are buried neath the sand. Some believe it's the strong who survive, and out here there truly is no place for the weak, but time and time again I see survival, if sought, is more a matter of luck or even predestination. I've seen a man get crushed pinned by a 3ft wide, 80 ft long pipe once when it rolled into a ditch. And just in case the pipe didn't kill him, the pipe rolling into the ditch broke free a nest of rattle snakes and he was bit 3 times in the face as he lay pinned under the pipe. The memory still makes me squirm, but that was one lesson I will never forget. When your time is up, it's up. The blaring tale falls not in line with the beautiful desert life picture I so want to be the only thing I draw out of your poem...but I see the underlying comparison to our own human existence in everyday life as well. So much of our life is perspective...and there will always be shorter lives and longer ones. There will always be new faces to learn and ones passed on you've begun to loose the details of. In the end, all our lives are very, very short truly. The sun is always parching, and the sand hot and dry... and we don't get very many second chances. But if, instead of holding precious every moment of life we have, we spend our days focusing on the negatives, or the lacking, we then have made a choice to be accomplice to the misery so many of us choose to use as shelter. For me, I have to daily count my blessings to remind myself not to take that role. It helps God's spring of eternal water replenish my mind and body, and His Word, that is my oasis. Beautiful poem. |

Michael...Thanks so much for reading and your reply. You showed the beauty and the harsh reality of the desert. I've never been that close to death and hope I never have to see it bas you have. My son was bitten by a copper head and almost lost his hand, that was scary enough for me. Take care my friend...Paul ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ Paul [This message has been edited by Paul Wilson (07-10-2021 11:35 PM).] |
