Fair to middlin' of nowhere

I read a meme the other day that said,
If you aren’t grown up by 60
you don’t have to.
I took it to heart
and feel like I’ll be
dodging a bullet
come the end of December.
This adulting thing is hard.
It makes me nervous.
I avoid taking on responsibilities
for fear of dropping the ball.
Which is silly,
because no one is going to
shame you in public
for not balancing your checkbook.
Just don’t tell my Dad,
He was a CPA.
I think
he thinks
he doesn’t quite understand people
who don’t reconcile their bank statements.
My Mom,
when she could get around,
kept a meticulous house.
I gave up on that long ago.
I never could muster the troops
to pitch in,
like she could.
I used to,
when I was
young and dumb
pitiful poor
and put lipstick
on pigs,
try hard to put
a shine on things
that long lost their luster.
Now I write
I Love You’s
in the dust.

What a sad lament, but not without merit. You shout out good messages throughout the poem. Amazing write, honest as all get out. I loved every darn line.

I love this from the first line til' the last Lori Belle     I love the way you write down to earth ~ heart-touching emotions!  This really touched me as I read and struck a few familiar chords I can relate to also.  Thank you for sharing your wonderful words ~ So enjoyed reading ~ Alana

I've never found a satisfactory, "one-size-fits-all" definition of "grown-up", Lori Rhoden.

Sounds much like a 'label', don't you 'gree?

Bluesy,
I don't care for labels, they are scratchy and a pain in the neck. Except for awesome, they put that label right on the fabric. It is wonderful. (so is cool) ~L
