Done Walking

I don’t see them yet,
I rarely raise my eyes.
But feel them circling,
‘Pon the forbidden skies.
The pretext they harvest.
‘Fore harrowing the deed.
Could spark angels to sing
Of the power of need.

To lay their open claim,
On the bones they will pick.
Even ‘fore last breath’s drawn,
In fever for the pith.
Without an ounce of shame,
Then fall back to the skies,
Already moving on,
‘Where the next victim lies.

So, finally, I look up.
I know that I am ready.
Where beady eyes of ebony,
On black wings, slow and steady,
Whisper to me of what awaits,
But then just fly away.
Leave me to pick up my own bones…
More like, just let them lay.

Now maybe a bit shook up,
In shadows of dejection.
I wonder what it is in me
That’s earned sweet death’s rejection.
Always one to try tempting the Fates
They won’t look me in eye.
Just leaves me to dance the headstones
Of all I have watched die.

It’s been a fever, been a chase,
Been a lifetime of reaching.
Of eyes cast down, a fool’s renown,
And tiny insects leeching
Blood through strained lips and fingertips
And every shadow talking.
Now I just lay, await decay…
My friends, I am done walking.

Vultures. Human and animal.  I hate them!
Very dark here, but very much you. Better than Poe. Oh, and you are definitely not done walking. "...miles to go..", Michael.

Michael...Loved this and the subject matter.
Waiting for death to consume you and let the darkness take you on that last ride with those that wait your demise.
Keep walking my friend the future will be bright and light up your life...Paul

I don't know, Jenn.  I seem to be much more partial to the winged species of vulture.  They at least wait till you die (most of the time) before they start picking your bones.

Like your "miles to go" reference.  I wrote a Frost tribute once:

"The world is twisted, dark and fake
But I have promises to break,
Eons to go before I wake,

Eons to go before I wake."

Lol, Sky~, I am sure that is the reason they keep avoiding me, now that you mention it.

Thank you for the smile.

Thank you for your kind words, Paul.  I had not given too much thought to the entire gist of this poem but when I read back on it now, it seems to me that it is entirely metaphorical.  I am probably one of those guys that will get up and go to work every day until the day he dies.  I need the routine in my life.  However, the most fundamental part of that routine, I think, was the giving up of all expectations in life.  In essence, laying down mentally.  Anyhow, seems even darker to think about it like that.

You inspire me to not let the dark have complete control of my pen, Karen.  There is warmth with light, and yours shines brightly.
I thank you for that.
