Mourning of the Night

I hear the silence sing to me—
The mourning of the Night;
Through the darkness, a symphony
Of dread-enmeshed delight.
The echoes rake the forest, void
Of all life would enhance;
And there with Shadow, undeployed,
Await deliverance.

I stand to meet the muted cry
With eyes half glazed and grim
Understanding why it is I,
That's been gifted this hymn.
I turn from side to side, denote
What I have always known;
The world will lie, the dead will float,
But I will stand, alone.

Still somewhere ‘twixt the living and
The non-living I fail
To comprehend, to hold at hand,
That but Night could avail.
It seems to me pure blasphemy,
This mimicry of voice;
And yet I sing, by her decree,
Alas, I have no choice.

For through the eyes that watch me, still
As death and dark as plight;
I see hopes I could never fill,
Wrongs I could never right.
Even so, virtues unattained
Have seemed to garner trust;
Not to belie the unexplained,
I know, simply, I must...

Till forest shadows bring to me
The sculptures of the dawn,
Till from the echoes, finally free,
The daylight lingers on;
Till from the solemn faces found
Within this world of light,
I pull my voice, let silence sound
The mourning of the Night.

I think I'm getting jealous of your structure.   I love it though. I  got lost in the images. The song is sad, but still it took my breath away.

"How much is real? So much to question
An epidemic of the mannequins
Contaminating everything"

lol, Jenn.  I wanted to say breathing is highly overrated, but I guess that wouldn't be appropriate if someone didn't realize I was joking.  Glad you liked the poem.

Interesting perception, Paul.  Definitely a lost soul, but for all the searching the only real companionship found has been the silence and shadow of night, where he finally feels a part of something...a belonging.  Days in the real world are abysmal and full of longing.  Nights bring a fullness all their own, only found in solitude.  That's when the muses come...the only time in this life I was not feeling utterly alone, at least at the point in time when this poem was written.
