Snake Charmer

He walks up to the shelf of baskets.
Reaches for one and pulls it down.
One of many, he never asks it
If maybe they wanna fool around?
The crowd sees him an entertainer,
A man who draws snakes from their coils.
The simple truth couldn’t be plainer.
You break their sleep, any snake roils.

Their heads rise up to mystify him,
Eyes meet, they try to hold his sway
But see he’s doing the same to them,
A contest of wills underway.
They play pacified to a sweet song.
In truth, just long to sink their teeth—
Send their poisons merrily along
To the warm blood flowing beneath.

Who’s playing who is not quite clear,
The snakes sure they’ve made up this game.
His nonchalance raising the tier,
Agitation ‘neath their calm the same.
He used to play this act with just one.
Today he has opted for two.
Deep down seeking a little more fun
With what these scaled creatures do.

For yes, both want to be conqueror,
And both will see him as their prize.
Never even a second unsure,
They’ll never seek each other’s eyes.
As a well scarred wrist reaches slowly,
Immune to all those fangs secrete.
Both strike, the unity most unholy,
One finding scales, but neither meat.

Standing back now, he smiles and observes
One hoping for another chance.
No blood drawn in this will of nerves,
He doesn’t see her worth the dance.
The other still on the floor, writhing,
What’s left there be up to the fates.
Truth of this act, uncompromising,
Tomorrow a new basket waits.

Five times now.
Still standing here drooling over your storytelling and flow like a god has just passed overhead. Or under. Did I say that I really enjoyed this yet?

Jenn, Not sure about the God passing over part, but He was definitely nearby the other day.   In truth, you can at least partially thank the rattlesnake I walked right up on work for the inspiration.  He stopped, and I stopped and we had a good stare off.  After awhile he finally strode off.  It amazes me how, had I moved first, his reactions probably would have been 100% different... We are all products of our nature after-all.  Anyhow, that was the event that got my mind wondering about snake-charmers and the mesmerization techniques snakes use on their prey.  I am glad you enjoyed this.

I’m wondering if it’s all in the instrument...since it is the one that does the charming...

Well done...
