I was raised out in the country,
About seven miles from town.
Me and my younger brother-
No other kids around.

We grew up in the pastures-
With a dog and twenty-two-
We were poor, but didn’t know it-
Hard to believe, but true.

Jobs were few, and far between-
So, I began to roam…
In search of greener pastures,
I drifted far from home.

I guess my journey took me-
Down a long and winding track…
If I learned a single lesson-
It’s the fact, you can’t go back.

Home had changed, or was it me?
Or maybe we both did-
Affections I had once displayed,
I long ago had hid.

Goodbyes were not so hard now-
As my suitcase I did pack-
I sighed, and sadly shook my head-
I found you can’t go back.

Not going back is one thing...it's when you can't go forward either that you really have to worry.  Good to see you, John.  Happy New Year.

I tried to post a reply on your work here but it wouldn't post so maybe I'm doing something wrong.....I've been posting here on and off for 19 years I guess I'm not up to date somehow.

Regards

Eric

Yeah, it's a hard lesson to learn my friend - almost a slap in the face, a realization that "if only I hadn't left".

Mine came when I was 17 and joined the Navy. Went off to boot camp, came home on two-week's leave . . . the slap I got was like I died: was resurrected and my past no longer existed. In only nine weeks I had ceased to exist.

Yeah.  You nailed it my friend.
