The Haunted

The hours, they pass long and slow,
A rivulet of melting snow.
An icy wind to cloak your frame,
As you carry your cross of shame.
Sometimes you see it through the storm,
Candlelit window—a house, warm;
But never let it steer you from
The date you hold with Kingdom Come.

This life?  A trial some might say,
Who’ve never had to pass this way—
Never had to entertain hope—
Catch the slack of fate’s fallen rope.
Time and distance, you come to know,
All you’ve left since your “letting go.”
Yet still you take it all in stride,
And march on in the name of pride.

Till darkness drips, sanity blurs
And evening’s ambiance obscures
Even the need that pushes you—
That voice telling you to stay true.
So trudge you on, eyes ever fixed
On some shadow crossing the Styx.
Snow now hot sands scalding your feet,
Standing before the judgment seat.

How did it ever come to this?
When did you become so remiss?
When human purposes indeed
Could never satiate such need.
This haunting, a need manifest
Within a mind that’s known no rest,
I wonder, can you see it now?
All preset eyes have disavowed.

Michael,
All your poetry is haunting by default, you are the master. I find myself taking a deep breath before I start to read you. At my age I'm still scared of the dark and you always take me there. Well done as always-awfully good. ~L
