Fair to middlin' of nowhere

0 posted 2019-10-19 09:05 AM

Work me
wakes up tired,
mildly nauseous,
trying to suck it up enough
with a cup of coffee
to put on makeup.
Work me
kisses the old man good-bye
and leaves Me me behind.
Work me
picks up lunch and purse
and weight of work persona.
Drives the highway to work,
toes curled in a knot.
Work me
parks the car relieved-
hates driving in the dark.
It is always dark this early.
Work me
gathers belongings
and sometimes some gumption
out of the car.
Walking to the door
readjusting my alter ego,
swipes a badge,
Work me
has arrived.
Some mornings drug by cats.
Nonetheless, routine overrides.
Each action, every motion
gaining momentum.
Work me
Settles in, logs on,
has a yogurt
and waits for the phone
to start ringing.
Then it is off
to find something
on the computer
to finish or start.
Work me
has been here
17 years.
Growing with the job,
and becoming more efficient
over the years.
Everything is organized.
Someone else does the cleaning.
Work me
has a reputation
for being goofy and punny.
A good listener
willing to give
lessons learned
as advice.
Always tired.
Work me
has had enough,
and /or
accomplished goals
by 2:00,
now watches time
stand still until 3:00.
Work me
heads for home
avoiding store and gasoline.
Despite sitting all day,
makes a bee-line
for the recliner
and assumes nap position.
Work me
relinquishes hold
as Me me takes over.
Bland in some ways,
overwhelmed in others.
it does not wear a costume.

My "work me" always insists on driving...even when we are home with nowhere to go.  Funny, I never realized there are indeed two versions of me here.  Insightful piece here.  Very much relate to it always being dark getting to work.  The world is evil that way.

Michael,
Early on I never socialized with co-workers it just seemed awkward. Truth be told I'm really pretty shy. I just hide it like I do the depression and anxiety. Easy-peasy. ~L

When I retired, work me had a hard time disappearing, and sometimes she tries to come back.  (I fight her off with a stick.)

Wow!  It’s like a thread you try to grasp, until you realize it’s a cord.  And soon it’s a rope that is slipping through your hands!  I’ve re-read this many times...and still, I grasp!
