The Darkness
By Paul Wilson

Who am I to wonder why
you live in darkness all the time
A thousand times each day you die
only to be reborn when you hear the clock chime

The will to live carries you onward thru
the battles you fight each day
Searching for the reason of your being
hoping to find happiness along the way

Dark clouds gather over head
making you turn and run in fear
Afraid the demons within your mind
will consume you if they appear

The morning Sun greets you from restless night
tossing and turning all night long
Heart beating faster and faster as you return
from that place where you don’t belong

Another day of living in darkness
looking for the door to escape this hell
Round and round never ending circle you pace
A prisoner of your mind where demons dwell

Day into night… night into day
clock on the wall has no hands
How will you survive another day
in this place no one understands

Tomorrow may give you hope
to fight for the life you love
You pray that God will hear your words
send you his strength from above

Who am I to wonder why
you live in darkness all the time and cry
I am the heart and soul of you
together we will never die

Heart-felt writing here Paul, that "Darkness'
can find any of us.

Well done,
Sky~

A Poem Begins as a
Lump in the Throat,
A Sense of Wrong,
A Home-Sickness,
A Love-Sickness.

Sky...You are so very right. My mixed up mind can sometimes sound like I am writing from actual experiences, but this is fictional, but could happen to any of us at any time. Thanks for reading and your reply...Paul

"A thousand times each day you die"

Not many understand the darkness, or will ever know just what a mountain some people have to climb just to find the doorknob each day, and even worse... to open it.

"How will you survive another day
in this place no one understands"

It's a strange thing the isolation that comes hand in hand with depression.  The fact that though many of us suffer from it, we all seem to suffer it alone...feel alienated from the world, to a point of not even trying to connect with it anymore.

This poem can be read many different ways, and though I am not sure exactly how you meant the last stanza to be interpreted, I related it on a personal level to my actual existence...that I had to accept "the darkness" that encompasses me, that no matter how much I try I will never be able to properly put it into word to feel I've found understanding of it with my peers, even though I know many relate on certain levels.

It also speaks of just how hard it is for someone who suffers from depression to see someone else going through it similarly, and feeling like any attempt to help them is akin to throwing a life preserver into a black abyss.

In any case, a most intriguing write, Paul.  Enjoyed and related well.

Michael...So glad you related to this. All I can say is I start writing and the words come to me from where ever they come from God or my mind.
This poem has a special meaning to me and someone I love dearly.

The last stanza is about a person facing their inner thoughts and self and becoming one with their inner thoughts and fighting to survive.

Thanks so very much for sharing part of your life story with me. I always felt a connection with you since I first came to PIP and starting reading your poetry...Paul

35+ plus years of Major Depressive Disorder/ Suicidal Ideations I can attest to dying 1,000,000 times and can understand why the older we get we lose more and more to do this disease. Thank you for posting such a vivid portrait of some of the things we deal with.
