Fair to middlin' of nowhere

It was an unexpected surprise.
I heard my mother’s laugh today
Something about my older brother’s
gray beard tickled her.
She spoke.
In a dry raspy voice she
struggled the words
as best she could.
He seemed to understand.
Then she laughed,
and for a moment
the clock turned back
to before things changed.
My heart leapt.
Understanding more now,
how much of her
still lingers.

Oh, how lovely, Lori!  I am so happy for you, despite the tears trickling down my cheeks at the sensitivity of this.
