I sit in the corner of a busy café alone crowded and noisy I’ve brought a newspaper with me it lies in front of me unopened for I sit and contemplate how I’ve lived my life not a lot of joy except for the wanderlust kind still . . . joy is as joy does I suppose I remember youthful strength the power in my arms my better-than-average looks man, it seems like yesterday such a fleeting time I know the years have left their message in my face and my strength I am aware of it I can see it I ponder my lack of prudence deceived me always thinking live for the moment I had gigantic impulses tried to cradle the world in my arms one sweet woman at a time ahhh . . . but I forgot the important things really? more important things? like love? oh, I fell in love at the drop of a hat but it was never real love I only found real love in these my last years No, I’m not complaining at least now I know what love is of that I am grateful I sit there a few more minutes sip my cold coffee walk out the door ©March 9, 2014 / Jerry Pat Bolton ~*~ Make of yourself a light.--Mary Oliver . . . ~*~ [This message has been edited by JerryPat2 (03-22-2014 10:20 AM).] |

It's kind of a bitter pill to swallow, but if given enough time, we can learn to accept what life drops in our lap. Every time I reach a new milestone on the birthday scale, I look back with envy upon the years of my youth. Little good it does me though, except one thing... I realize, the wisdom I hold today, along with my appreciation of the finer things, I simply never had in my youth. I think I'm happy the way things are. I wouldn't mind being "King for a Day" though. ![]() Enjoyed your thoughts on this one. |

Rex, thank you. I hope I wasn't coming off whiny, I tried to write this poem as honest and straightforward as possible. I'm not an unhappy person. Like I said in the poem I have found love and it sustains me. I live alone, but I'm not lonely. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment here, I appreciate it. ~*~ Make of yourself a light.--Mary Oliver . . . ~*~ |

No, not at all... I simply feel that as we grow older, we spend more time thinking about our past. It becomes more important to us, that people should see us in the light of our choosing, and hopefully the light they find in the wisdom we share turns even our mistakes into some form of success. |

Thoughtful poem. I guess we all reflect on the many things we have traded for wisdom and yet I find wisdom to be a precious gift. Wouldn't it be great to have it all at the same time? Ida |

Oh for sure, Ida, wisdom would be great to acquire earlier, but it just takes its own sweet time catching up with us, at least it sure did me. Thank you for being here. ~*~ Make of yourself a light.--Mary Oliver . . . ~*~ |

It has been said that "youth is wasted on the young". I guess after Spring has sprung does any part of change begin to show within our thoughts. With knowledge gained in the Fall of life, sometimes comes wisdom. jo |

Ahhh . . . There is no doubt that that old adage pretty much runs true to form. I would like to think if I could go back I would change a few things, but somehow I see myself making the same mistakes. Why? Because of youth and absolute ignorance. Thank you for stopping by, Jo. ~*~ Make of yourself a light.--Mary Oliver . . . ~*~ |

Jerry you are wise enough to count your blessings and old enough to recognize them. Yes, you are right about love. Lori ![]() |

"I tried to cradle the world in my arms"---I like the image this brings. Like it's a baby (or a woman), and it's a good memory, and all the things that happen in between are nothing to regret. Carry on Jerry |

Hi Jerry. Yes, I've been there often with cold cups of coffee. I think that remembering our youth is a gift we must give ourselves from time to time - makes it more meaningful. Enjoyed your words. |

My growing up youth was very hard on me, Helen, as were my entrance into manhood, but I survived. Learned a hell of a lot about people. Never though the day would come when I could honestly say, I am happy with myself and the world around me. ~*~ When they give you ruled paper write sideways. ~*~ |

It is nice to revisit these poems. Today I realize how "rich" you are to be able to say "I am happy with myself and the world around me." I'm still trying to save up for that day. It is a goal I hope doesn't elude me. Like I joke at work, that I can retire ten years after I die. ~L |
