The First Elizabeth. Speech before the approaching Spanish Armada 1558 My loving people, I am come amongst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live and die amongst you all; to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom, and my people, my honour and my blood, even in the dust. I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm; to which rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms. Cometh the hour Cometh the woman These alone are her words Yes, her words Not those placed by the Bard On Henry’s lips at Agincourt Still they ring true and who amongst you Would not answer her call? A leader of men Who sheathed their swords For lack of argument Do not flavour her With myth and legend The truth is ample enough. Speeches, speeches, speeches. Both in the election in America and in the European referendum England, we hear them day by day, but most wouldn’t inspire me to take the dog for a walk on a rainy day. I think they have lost the art somewhere down the line. * * * |

"I think they have lost the art somewhere down the line." I tend to agree, Cari. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

Well, she was a monarch. Most people in council were supposed to be on her side. However, her fiery passion is evident and in her case it was contagious! However, you wouldn't hear many of them today say they'd take up arms themself. Self assuming and haughty orators today, puffed up with pride looking for dirt on their opponents. Same old same old, over and over. You could put them in a blender and they'd all come out the same colour. Like you say in your final verse, in her case, truth was ample enough. Good write! Is there a 2nd Elizabeth - just kidding. You won't find any other I bet..I don't even want to hear the speeches, they bore me to death - rather take a walk in these lovely nice weather beckoning me right now, while the dog is straining at its (imaginary) leash. But the write is aptly fitting |
