Candlelight at Candlemass |

Shadows shrink the room We share togetherness In the halo of candlelight Enclosed in our fireside world ~ Soft light from the flickering flame Touches your cheek with rose The old dog belly crawls closer Completing the intimate circle ~ We gaze at fire pictures A sombre landscape in the embers Blackened outcrops, grey ash plains Lava glow under the fracture cracks ~ Wood smoke tugs the senses Plucks the strings of memory Children again in a long ago home Wrapped tight in warmth and love ~ The candle dies in a wax waterfall I reach for you, hold you close The dancing shadows join the embrace And raindrops, soft on window lattice * * * |

The only thing wrong with this poem is that I didn't write it. Your words danced gracefully and in perfect step. Lovely, Cari, luv-er-ly! ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |

This poem not only tells the story well, but also tells why I read you.. |

All over England you can find these farm workers cottages in the small villages. The prices of these cottages have escalated to an extent that they are now far beyond the reach of ordinary house buyers. They are bought by the rich as holiday homes for a few weeks in the summer and left empty for the rest of the year or are rented out at sky high rents. We bought our cottage some years ago in the Kent countryside when we moved from London; actually it is two cottages made into one. Instead of gutting the interior like many do, we kept it as near as possible to how it was and for a couple of rooms we stripped away what had been altered to them over time. The cottage dates back to around 1750. Thank you for reading and for your kind comments. Candlemas is a Christian holiday, on February 2. The poem relates to those evenings when we retire to our time capsule and relax in a small world of an open hearth fire and candlelight. Cari. |
