Fragments of Thoughts,
  Hopes, and Dreams

shreds of twilight mist
settle across the barren
    fields of  Winter

wood smoke dances
in an angry sky of
   ragged clouds

the North wind is
a  friend  to no one

this forest night deepens
with the distant sound of
    evening bells

Only these mountains
can talk against time.

Does that lone pine
of a thousand years
have its memories too?

Are the willow’s leaves
gentle fingers brushing
the cold, still pool?

how many nights
has an indifferent
moon spent in the
abandoned cabin?

why is new love
ever more difficult?

if I knew each night
that I was only dreaming
of her, I would never
have awakened

Your poem reads like a meditation, dear Bruce. Wonderful thoughts and imagery.

I still can hear the bells that ring in some remote place within my brain ... the bells of my childhood and youth in Switzerland.

as always, thanks so much, Margherita !

yes ... a (Zen) 'meditation' ... that is essentially the primary intention ...

So many great lines...enjoyed the imagery with each stanza, but this stanza is my favorite!

"how many nights
has an indifferent
moon spent in the
abandoned cabin?"

Well done.
