Death of a Mercenary. |

Van Kleef was taking too long to die Someone should shield his eyes from the sun But no one moved He accepted the pain with a grunt The void behind the eyes held nothing Hatred would have been a saving grace The cleansing department arrived Red necked sky raptors circled above the flies feeding on the field dressing As a useless gesture We covered the body with rocks A group concession to compassion Reached for packs and weapons And moved towards the westering sun Without a backward glance. |

Van Kleef could have been a Blackwater mercenary in Iraq...hired killers also suffer casualties.. Or more likely, knowing your poetry, Van Kleef is probably a Mercenary, a Boer..fighting for rights to the Cape Of Good Hope? When you think about it, all modern wars, and conflicts settled by violence, have been fought by Mercenaries, mostly from the United States. That is what this poem made me think of. "Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance." Carl Sandburg |

Hard for me to capture my thoughts around this one, Cari. Could be it is because I am just now on my first cuppas java and my mind is still sleep-wired. I loved the poem though, very much. ~ If they give you ruled paper, write sideways. ~ |
