my poem went on a strike
a hunger strike
wouldn’t even drink water
that was an immediate concern
my poem
grew morose, like a pampered child
I tried to bribe it with money
it laughed in my face
that hurt
I picked it up
whispered loving things to it
it worked
life was coming back to my poem
it demanded food
drank all the water I had offered
after a literary burp
my poem punched me until I was silly
ripped off all the money I had
the clothes off my back
walked away
using my comb to tame its wild hair
said . . .
I’m going over to your girlfriend’s house

Ah...now might you be saying something about the fickle nature of our beloved poems? My how some do drive us to our wits end. I think our Muses aren't even amused! Sounds like this one of yours was really making a play for your attention by pushing your buttons! ~L

I have many unfinished poems just sitting and waiting for me to do them some justice and I doubt I ever will. This is just a nonsensical look at all those unwritten poems. Thanks, Lori, for your thoughts on it.

So happy you received some pleasure from my nonsensical foray into the non-literary, non-poetical thoughts of mine, Tanya . . .

funny nonsense, enjoyed. Sometimes the muse needs a lot of cajoling

Loved the humor in this one. Not being a poet I never have to fear those dry times.I only write what comes into my mind after reading what others write. Best to you, jo

Jerry, this is remarkably similar to "The Poem You Asked For" by Larry Livis? Different words, yes, but the theme, events, and even the structure is virtually identical.

It's on page 3 of this book, available for reading using Amazon's "Look Inside" feature.

Hah! Yeah you're right, Ron. Hope you aren't thinking plagiarism. Could be I had read that poem before and later on when I started writing this poem images came to me from earlier reading of the poem. Still, I don't recall ever reading it before and I know I don't have the book. Eh! Nope,

Hi, Jerry!
I've got 5 or 6 unfinished poems now,
so I understand you very well!

Yep, it is a common problem among the writers of prose, etc. Thanks for stopping by.

I had forgotten all about this poem (the last line did seem to ring a bell) and my response. Memory is a fickle thing.  I was just thinking how I hadn't read anything from you lately and I was delighted to find this "new" poem. Ha! Joke's on me! Take care!

Thanks, Lori, for your comments on my poem. I haven't posted on here lately too much. Old story, not enough traffic to interest me. Ahhh . . . But you are back, I'll post one now.

This is great and your conclusion is absolutely ingenious!
