Yesterday, Or The Day Before Another Halloween has passed– Does it really seem a year has gone since last we saw goblins and ghost and other alien forms of life standing at our door, hoping to fill their bags? I plainly remember last year, yesterday or the day before, not months and months ago, when I was younger than today. But as I went outside this morning, the leaves seemed a little redder, more yellow and brown – less green than yesterday’s were. Fall and the weather both know it’s now the time of year for pumpkins to turn into pie, turkeys to become golden, dressing filled birds, and soon – the jingle of bells, the piney smell of fresh cut trees, the sight of gaily wrapped gifts of this and that, and Santa’s laughter in our ears. A year ago I opened the door to laughter and giggles, a shouted “Trick or Treat!”, and aliens before my eyes . . . A Year ago, just yesterday. . . or the day before. © wesley james beard, jr. |

You're playing my song, man, loud and clear. Time is fleeing by, even normal everyday things it seems I can't get them done as I could yesterday. Yup, you're playing my song. If they give you ruled paper write sideways. |

Hi James.I love the way you write. Here I sit in the late autumn of my life wondering when or where my last dance will appear. My Northern friends and family still believe that Florida is all sunshine and roses.Yes my roses are in bloom again but the air is chilly from northern winds. My son just came in from working at a golf course wearing a jacket and also wanted a sweat shirt to put under it. He said all the golfers just quit after the ninth hole. I think that alone proves it is windy and chilly out there today. And although I keep hearing about the leaves falling no one sees the mess my giant Sycamore tree in my back yard and the giant Magnolia out front makes all year round. I still have garden work to do all as things just seem to grow out of bounds. Best to you, enjoy the changes, Jo |

Jo, don't you just LOVE Sycamore trees?? In one residence or another that I've owned, always planted at least one of them. I have a 30 or so year old one on the side of the house that I originally planted (about 30" tall) to shade that part of the house where the evening sun beat on it and the air conditioner unit and it's just beautiful. Thanks for looking in and you wonderful comment. j. |

James, I love the tree but the mess it makes all year round is too much for me now.I have asparagus grass under it now so the dried cones and leaves fall into that.Last week I filled a trash can full of those old dead cones and there are many many more hidden in the asparagus plants. When I had a young man mow for me he drove that huge rider over them and pushed them into the ground so the grass in front by the street is not good now.I have had to replant that three times and have decided no more. As a woman has to work harder and harder to look presentable as she ages so do the gardens I have all around the house front back and both sides are all over grown now. But I am happy with my gardens and my over flowing book cases. Best to you Jo. |

How I can RELATE! Love the anticipation in this, even along with the lament, there is more in store: Fall and the weather both know it’s now the time of year for pumpkins to turn into pie, turkeys to become golden, dressing filled birds, and soon – the jingle of bells, the piney smell of fresh cut trees, the sight of gaily wrapped gifts of this and that, and Santa’s laughter in our ears. Whether on the shoal or on the shore, |

Soon seems to come too soon even in its beauty, there is that haunting feeling of give and take |
