FALLING LEAVES So soon the leaves begin to fall, orange and red their hues And I think back, when I was young, in piles of leaves to run Much older now, and wiser too, but kicking leaves I choose And echoes of a laughing child, those Autumn days of fun Then years to pass, and walking then, young lovers hand in hand We scooped the leaves, at each to throw, in love without a care I kissed her by the Church Lichgate, no commitment or demand And passing there in later years, at falling leaves I stare And Rooks above the Churchyard call, and bells to toll the time A shadow by an ancient yew, dead petals on the ground So silent here this resting place, and crosses all in line My gravest fear, now you're not here, and mist descends around As Autumn comes, the birds to fly, away from colder days And by the fire, I watch the flames, and see you there my dear The warmth of you, within my heart, how gentle were your ways And every leaf I stand to count, each one a falling tear. |
