Fair to middlin' of nowhere

My peaceful early mornings
during harvest of the wheat
end on the blacktop
at the end of the driveway
You can hear them
headed south to the stop sign
at the corner next door
They follow the road
around to the right
You can see them
peeking between the trees
as they come to the tracks
They hit 'em hard
and keep on rolling
crossing the bridge
then curving south
Diesels gear up
on the the straight away
with a roar.
Full of wheat
they are headed to elevators
to dump their load
All day long
back and forth
empty and full
they rumble and growl
down my road
As the shadows lengthen
and even on into the dark
they run as long as
the combines in the fields
will fill them
When the dew sets in
the wheat draws moisture
everything shuts down
All becomes quiet again
Solitude is mine
until the the next day
when the sun rises
and burns the dew away

And the breadbasket of America is living up to its name. We have something similar here in south Louisiana, but the diesels here are carrying raw sugarcane back and forth, back and forth.

I heard the other day that Kansas is back to number one in wheat production, we were down to number 4. I think most of the state has had a good harvest. Next will come the burning of the stuble fields. Thanks for commenting

Must be quite the spectacle in these busy times! All that golden load that is so important for us. Thank you for showing us so vividly what's going on down in Kansas, dear Lori.

You are so kind Margherita! I try to bloom where planted, so to speak. I have no oceans or mountains to write about soo...
Thanks for your comment

Thank you very much James. I envy you your vistas in Hawaii!!! I'm sure you have more than just pretty scenery to look at
