silently
like a cat burglar
it arrives
immersing its hanging moisture
everywhere
density to the nth
surreal landscape
something out of a science fiction
terror-induced novel
you stand there
beneath a streetlight
you can barely see
moisture has saturated your clothes
your thoughts confused
confined
you can make out
obscure shapes and forms
but can you really
the fog is so thick you can't see
anything
still, the shapes keep appearing
as they do
you become fearful
on a primal level
no reason for being afraid
still . . . you are

Fog first became scary for me in movies like Jack the Ripper and Frankenstien. I think you are right that the fog does scare us on a very primal level (at least at night) Luckily for me, here in Kansas the fog is most often in the mornings.  It is pretty cool when it hangs about 5ft abouve the ground and you can drive under it.  Enjoyed your write.

Yep, Lori, you are so right about the primal fright. I was searching for the right phrase when I was writing this, and you have just given it to me. Thank you always for being here.

Oh!
It never scared me )
I love it!
And I love the first lines:
"silently
like a cat burglar
it arrives"

Things are created in the thickness of a blanketing
fog. I would agree, JP, be afraid,
be very afraid.
Enjoying your poetry, JP.

You know, JP, when in the fog I think about
being surrounded by a turquoise light, a Tiffany sky.
There is where I feel protected.

Good for you, Ms. E. It tends to have the opposite effect on this crusty old guy . . .

Reminded me of the time I went to the races is Inglewood or Pasadena and as I was driving home that evening the fog set in so think I could only make one or two lines on the hilly roadway and I was afraid to stop and possible get rear ended and I couldn't make out the side of the road to see where I was going so I kept going and it was an unnerving experience...worse than most of the fog I drove in Germany...James
