He blew rings for me

wrote my name
on the sky

a marquise of mixed letters
from a cauldron of smoke
that rose from his mouth

his kiss of confetti
flavored with sea salt
and Benson & Hedges

it was south of the boardwalk
by the whirl of the carousel

at the ocean's reception

we were just turning 20.

Sometimes the insertion of something very specific and of a time fixes a poem in a way nothing else does.  This poem, I think, needed Benson & Hedges.

I had forgotten B&H.  I know I smoked it, 'cuz I smoke anything I could get my hands on in those days . . .

Thanks for the snapshot.

Yes, thanks for the snapshot.  You took me back to my own youth but only to realize that little things like that haven't stayed in my brain.  Pity I guess.

Oh so beautifully rendered memory, dear EmmaRose. Funny, I have never been "really" smoking, but I used to have that elegant box of Benson & Hedges on my desk ...
