there you were
standing at the barricades
at the finish line watching the racers
cross it
your dad was running in the marathon
mom was cheering him on beside you
a happy time
the whole world has seen the photo
taken from a camera moments before you died
the two murders who killed you
are in the picture too
I'm sorry they killed you
I'm sorry they were born
I'm sorry one of them is still alive
I'm sorry for the other two the murderers killed
I'm sorry for all the horribly wounded
I'm sorry your mother has brain injuries
I'm sorry your sister lost a leg
I'm sorry for all the amputees
those who were there will never be the same
you were only eight-years-old
you will never experience your first tentative kiss
from the cute little girl in your class
when the date of your birthday comes each year
you won't be there to blow out the candles
your mother and your father
has had a dagger thrust into their hearts that day
a dagger they will live with
forever
little eight-year-old boy
I sob for you
I curse the day your two murderers were brought into this world
you might have grown up playing third base
for the Boston Red Sox
you might have discovered a cure for cancer
AIDS, whatever
you might have fallen in love
made a home for your wife and your children
and was not overly special in any way
except pride for your children that would come
little eight-year-old boy
I hope there really is a Heaven
to embrace you

Amen.

Such a tragic event caught on film for all of history to see and, along with your poem, so much shared that's poignant, horrifying, asinine, and heartwrenching all at the same time.  Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Jerry Pat.This is the first I have seen about this horrible happening. I expected more about this and the Texas Fertilizer blow up. It is history after all, sad and horrible as it might be.thanks, jo

Thanks, Jo, we are getting so used to terrible things happening to us that we just seem to bury our heads in the sand. I'm sick of it.

Another senseless tragedy.  We can only hope
he is in a better place. Your tribute will keep him alive and warm in our heart. I would like to believe he would have been one of the good ones out here, in a world
where evil is becoming the norm.
Thank you for the beautiful tribute

Much obliged, EmmaRose, for the kind words. The little boy might well have grown into one of the good guys, but he never had a chance.
