here among the fragrance of the swamp
a lovely flower blooms
amid the cypress knees and mystical legend
feisty is this beauty
centuries-old heritage
come into play

they are world-class
the Cajun lass

born on the bayou
like the song says
Zydeco-influenced Cajun two-step
impish in their ways
confident and boastful, beautiful ladies
strains of laughter of their mothers

these Cajun Queens
know what it means

dark, flashing eyes can cut down a man
mystical background, a la
dat voodoo and da hoodoo
charms and gris-gris, rooster's blood, sha
don't eat nuttin' they cook dat's red
menstrual blood seals any curse

all that folklore
they do implore

she keeps a black-iron pot
full with crawfish etouffeé, don't ya know
rice always ready
garlicky buttered French bread toasted
for sopping, sha
crisp fried soft shell crabs on the side

I'm telling you
you can't be blue

in the land of laisse les bons temps rouler
dat's let the good times roll, sha
good times is tantamount to a religion in the swamps
my, my, but yes, Cajun ladies
they got dat, you know sumptin
what makes Cajun men go ayeeeeeeeeeee! Bebe

life they pursue
breaking taboos

making love to the light of a Cajun moon
never thought it a sin
bring on those babies to coo and to hold
one on her hip
t'other in da oven
nothing slow down dat Cajun lady

dance fe do do
face all aglow

got a fine family, life she goes on by
soon bouncing dem grandkids on old creaky knees
great-grandchildren come too soon
now dat little pretty Cajun lady, now called Mamere
ready to go home, but she asks for one more scoop of dat
turtle sauce picante

Cajun Lady
first name Marie

Interesting piece of writing. It's not easy to "write" in dialect and do it sucessfully.
You have done it well. (Helps to be from Louisiana )
Much enjoyed.

Thank you very much Sue. I appreciate the time you took to read and comment on my poem. Heh.Heh And yes, it does help to be from Louisiana to write the dialect.
