searching for a new
way to say it
bottle is half empty
or is that half full
all I know is I'm pickled
inebriated on habitual
my face is wet
and it hasn't rained in three weeks
without my id
feels like a nor'easter
shaking what little thinking parts
all to hell
what was I thinking about
oh . . .
searching for a new way to say it
just figured it out
my face is wet because of
the tears
my eyes are slits
searching for that celebrated flash
when I finally come up with
a better way to . . .
you know
old reflections seem to sparkle
among the dust wherein it lies
take another sip (swallow) (gurgle) (gulp)
aha!
I figured it out
there is no better way of saying . . .
I love you

This poem also makes me think of Billy Joels song The Piano Man, making love to his tonic and gin. You describe it well Jerry. Soul searching as your title says.

Good morning, J. Appreciate the kind words. Good to see you back . . . Not that you were gone that long.

That is why we are poets.....always searching for a way to say something "old" in a "new" way, which you have so perfectly expressed in your poem.

Yes, JP the best way to say it, is just to say it.
